POSSIBLE ENGINE DAMAGE DUE TO OIL PUMP FAILURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So the low oil pressure display popped up on dash yesterday. I had just drove the car about 12 miles, and parked it for about an hour. As soon as I start the car back up the low oil pressure light turns on. It tells me to shut the car off so I turn it off. I then turn the car back again for a couple of seconds, message comes up again. Tried it one more time with the hood open to listen for ticking. My engine makes noise all the time so I really didn't know what to pay attention to. I did hear some ticking, but it was not loud at all and it was barley noticeable, it sounded pretty normal to me. Im pretty sure it is the oil pump, or possibly an sensor. My car is an 2011 LS3 w/42k miles, no engine mods and NO WARRANTY. It just ran out a couple of months ago.

-Is there anyway to troubleshoot to find out if the sensor is the issue WITHOUT turning the car on?

-Should I expect the dealership to replace my engine if there is damage done since oil pumps on most chevy v8's are known to fail?

-What actually is damaged when an engine breaks due to low oil pressure?

-Could I just replace the heads or block IF there is engine damage or do I have to replace the entire engine?

This may be a dumb question...but you didn't mention it. Have you checked the oil level?

Check oil level? The block has two plugs on the oil gallery on driver side, can thread an adapter in there with a mechanical oil pressure gauge and test. That will tell you what is it, pump or sensor. Believe it's m16x1.5 threads. You would still need to start the car. Only long enough to compare the gauges.

Do not expect Chevy to replace anything since your out of warranty.

I checked the oil level on the dash. It was at 68%.

No, that the oil life not the oil level. You need to go pull the dipstick under the hood

Oil level won't tell much if the pump is out. I would also think that if it were low enough on oil to cause low pressure, the low oil level light would trigger as well. (I believe there's one on these cars)

The 2011 does not have an oil light.

If the pump failed, which by all accounts is most likely the problem, DO NOT run the motor. Running the motor without the pump working will make things far worse.

You have to tow the car to a reputable shop.
You have to replace the pump. Go with the Melling, not the stock garbage pump.
It will be in the area of $1,000 to fix with labor and parts.
There are a million threads about this exact problem. Search the forums and every question you have on this will be answered.
Internal motor damage cannot be determined by the Internet. A mechanic is needed.

Talk to your dealer. Maybe being prone to failure, they'll warranty some if not all the work. It won't cost you anything to ask. I wouldn't give up until someone as high as I could go up declined it. They know there's a problem... Good luck

Lets just eliminated the obvious (no matter how dumb it may sound ) and for shits n giggles, have the OP check his oil level via the dip stick. Humor me.

Powertrain warranty is 5 years, 100,000 miles.

How do you have no warranty if you've done no mods? When did they release the 2011s?

Not all v8 have oil pump issues. It's only known with the LS3. I'm guessing the relief valve is stuck and you will need a new pump.

Right, am I the only other person who was thinking this?

That 68% is oil life monitor not oil level. If you ever get low oil message you turn it off and check the oil level. You have a 5yr 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty. if you have oil you call GM road side assistance and they will pick the car up and bring it to a dealer. Do not restart the engine. Call GM or your preferred dealer and tell them you have a low oil pressure message and the oil level is full.
