2010 Camaro 3.6L Timing Chain Inquiry
Hello everyone. I have been a lurker on the forums for awhile, everyone always has great advice when it comes to issues. It has come time for me to ask for help, or any advice. My wife's 2010 Camaro 3.6L RS just recently threw a CEL. I took it to Autozone to see what the code was, P0008. Did some research and found it had to do with the timing chain, which come to find out tends to be the bane of several 3.6L owners, and not just Camaro. Local dealer also ran a diagnosis just to confirm. My problem is that GM has released an extended warranty for the timing chain in their 3.6L TSB No.: 11340A http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...43857-8394.pdf.
I did not see the Camaro covered, but I have heard of local dealers doing the service under this TSB, since it is the same repair. Local dealer wants $1200 for the repair and they won't budge since she is the second owner. We have a baby on the way and my wife had some large medical bills at the beginning of the year that we are still paying on, so financially this is at a terrible time. If someone here was able to get a dealer to do the repair under the extended timing chain warranty, what hoops did you have to jump through? I am at a loss at this point and just looking for advice. I have spoke with GM about the issue, and they left it up to the local dealer, so I think I am screwed. I want to say thank you ahead of time for any information or advice. TLDR: 2010 Camaro is not listed on the vehicles for timing chain extended warranty replacement. It is the same part and the same repair. the question is for people that were able to get the timing chain replaced under the extended warranty. What did you do? |

Find a local Cadillac dealer and call them. Explain the extended warranty for this motor and that GM now extends it out to 120k. If they say no, wash, rinse and repeat with another dealer.

Our local Cadillac/GMC dealer unfortunately said that since I took it to the Chevrolet dealer first, I would need to work with them. I will need to try another area, because locally, good service is tough to find. Feels like they are playing hot potato. I didn't understand why the Camaro was not included on the list of eligible vehicles, since it is the same part. I appreciate the suggestion! Thank you!

Some people have had luck calling Becky at Rodgers Chevrolet in Woodhaven, MI. She is a regular on this site and has a great record of assisting board members.

If your a longstanding customer, ask about a goodwill repair. Or price reduction.

65K currently on it. We've taken other GM vehicles to them, so I can check about getting any assistance. Again, I appreciate the advice everyone. Currently waiting to hear back from a customer service adviser from GM. Hopefully with good news.

That extended warranty is not on the Camaro and you cannot put a warranty claim in to GM if it doesn't specifically apply to yours. There is no secret way to do it or anything like that. What it comes down to is a good will repair. Those are done as warranty and you pay a percentage. The dealer has to do it at warranty rates, which means cheap compared to regular rates- both parts and labor are priced differently.
What it comes down to is the dealer doesn't want to use up their good will budget and do the repair for cheap, they tend to save that for regular customers who show some loyalty to their dealer.

Thank you VTSummit, that information is extremely helpful. I still cannot believe they did not include the Camaro, but hey, lucky us right?

I don't think the failure rate in the Camaro is anywhere near the other 3.6 equipped vehicles. I had a Traverse in today that needs it done. One thing we seem to notice is that the vehicles with regular maintenance and the correct oil never seem to need the repair. It could be coincidental though because it's a small sample size.
I didn't look up the Camaro, but in a Traverse it's about $1100 or so because it's time consuming. Parts prices aren't really that bad.
