So I needed new back tires . I had 265/35/ 22 . Wanted to switch to 265/30. Had them put on and well one tire is slowly leaking air , but my concern is why are the wheels sticking past the tires ? Is there something they didn't do right ?

Well , you said that you had 265/35 , and the new tires are 265/30 , the difference is 5% less tirewall than the previous set , this may explain the problem , since the older tires may or may not already been on the far stretched to fit the wheel size
But you also fail to say what's the wheel size , 22x?? , that's also important

One can not just cut down the tirewall percentage , and doing it to the point where there is not enough tire to fit the rims nicely , and the result is what you are dealing with
You can try to make it fit better , by increasing the tire pressure , so the tire meets the rim , then bring it down to the recommended 32LB or so , the shop guys probably didn't do it because the limitation on the tire PSI won't allows them to do it
It can be very dangerous doing it , so , be very care full if you try that

It looks like the tires are to narrow for the rims, what width are the rims?

U need a 295 or 305 tire for that wheel

Your wheel offset is too low too causing it to stick out by the looks of it it's less than 25 offset.

Tires too narrow need more tread width.

Looks like that's a too narrow tire for too wide rim. How wide is your rim??? The 265/30/22 rim width range is 9-10", 9.5 is the ideal. If your rim is wider than 10" then there's your problem.

Thank you all for the quick replies . I am waiting on my wheel guy to text me back the sizes of the rear wheels . He's the one that told me going to a 30 series would just make the tire wall lower to the rim so I could lower it eventually .. I didn't think going from 35 to 30 would leave the wheel sticking out .

It's not the aspect ratio that is the problem, it appears to be the width of the tire in relation to the width of the wheel that is the problem.

I would be finding a new tire and wheel guy. That tire is not wide enough for that wheel by a lot. A tire professional that know a his business would never mount that tire on that wheel.
