Sometimes they don't really inspect your trade-in

Last week I traded in my '14 1LT. While I was inside waiting for... whatever it is they keep you waiting for, the dealer took my car to the garage to have them check it out... twice. The weird thing is, it never went to the shop. What he didn't realize was that since I hadn't taken all of my property out of it yet, my dash cam was still connected. It starts recording every time the engine is started, so everything was caught on cam. If I had known, I would have had the sound recording too.

Now granted, the car was only a year old, and only had 6,400 miles on it, so I guess they saw the condition I'd kept the rest of it in and figured that if it runs OK, there's probably nothing wrong with it.

Which might be why he never went to the garage. First he drove by the area where they wash them and chatted with someone there for a few minutes. Then he drove to a parking lot and stopped at this car. You can't really tell, but there's a woman in the driver's seat, and a man sitting in the back seat. Weird, right?

The dealer (in the ball cap) got out and walked to the car and talked to these people for about 5 minutes

They also looked in the trunk

Afterward, my dealer (which by now I'm thinking might dealing more than cars) got into the other people's car and moved it into a parking space. The other people left in a different car (on the left). You can see that the guy that was in the back seat can walk fine, so I don't know why he wasn't sitting up front.

After that, he brought mine back to the dealership.

A while later the sales manager drove it to somewhere else on the lot and met my dealer and some other guy, whose inspection involved all of opening the hood and pointing at the engine.

The rest was them standing around, chit-chatting and smoking. LOTS of smoking. I guess car dealers smoke a lot of cigarettes.

Thanks, that all makes sense. Except the guy riding in the back seat like he was being chauffeured around. Maybe they had something on the front seat.

yeah, not a big deal, really. The last car I traded, I worked the entire deal over the phone. I wanted $10k, he offered $8k. He called me back 45 minutes later and agreed to $10k, sight unseen. He probably called his wholesaler who said ok.

What was odd, I checked out the new car once I got to the dealership, they didn't give my trade more than a passing glance, even when on their lot.

They do so many strange things. I'd almost like to work on a lot for a year just to get the inside view if what's going on.

They're definitely worth the investment, and they're a great protection against insurance scammers that purposely cause accidents. Here's a bonehead that backed into someone, then tried to claim they were rear-ended. There's no audio, but the guy points at his dashcam and they leave, visibly pissed off. It's awesome.
