Is there a difference between SS and Z/28 diffs? Can you buy and fit a Z/28 diff?

Hi everyone! I was wondering if there is a difference between the Z/28 diff, and that of a normal SS. I seem to recall reading somewhere here that the two diffs were indeed different. I know the Z/28 has a helical system - does the normal SS have a clutch type diff?

I also recall reading that the Z/28 diff is a restricted part, ie you can only buy it if you actually own a genuine Z/28. Is that correct / still the case?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Z/28=Helical, 3.91, diff cooler
vs
SS=clutch, 3.45 or 3.23, no cooler
vs
1LE=clutch, 3.91, no cooler

People have been getting the Z/28 parts, you just may have to do some calling around.

btw, would the Z/28 diff fit in a normal SS without any modifications? Is it a straight swap, would it mate to the halfshafts, or do you have to do some other modifications? I heard for example that the ZL1 diff requires modifications for the exhaust manifold due to clearance.

Yes, it's a straight swap, except you would need to get the plumbing for the diff cooler (if that matters to you). I looked at this option, and decided it was more cost effective to install a TrueTrac in my 1LE differential.
