I actually watched something about those on the discovery channel, they are called twheels, apparently those things are the replacement for traditional tires. They will not go flat, and have a much longer tread life. I think that its a pretty cool idea, but ruins the spike strip plan for high speed pursuits.

The Tweel IS OLD. Mercedes did those back in the late 90's or early 2000. I remember seeing a show on them too. But recall they were more of a "WHAT IF" kind of thing. and it will never happen for the reason you mention.. Plus If i remember right they were unstable at high speed, rough riding.
