Hurst shifter question
Is the hurst short throw shifter better than the stock 1le shifter or are they the same? And do I have to buy the whole shifter assembly or can I just get the chrome stick and shift ball and install it to the stock one?

Wondering the same thing as far as whether the Hurst is a true upgrade for the GM short throw. Pretty sure if you change, you need to install the entire shifter assembly. GM shifter is a rod, Hurst is a blade.

you will need to replace the whole "system" I had the dealer do it...
It makes shifting faster, more direct, LOUDER, you will hear everything your transmission is doing.. Is it better??? It really depends on what your looking for.. I love the Hurst T shifter as that was what was in my original Camaro.

The OEM 1LE shifter is pretty good. I'm not sure if the Hurst shifter would be an upgrade; it might even be a downgrade. The OEM shifter works pretty good at the track. In my experience, when you get the shifts too short, you start missing shifts every once in a while at the track, since it's a notchy transmission due to its torque capacity to start with.

Warning: The metal shift knob is freakin cold, it is a chunk of metal and can take 4 or 5 minutes to warm up.. I wrapped my T handle in leather and it turned out really nice.... the dealer install was not cheap, it cost me 200 but I did not have the lift or time to do it and it worked for me..

This was my experience installing the Hurst Shifter on my 2014 1LE: The performance between the shifters is personal preference, the Hurst is "ratchety" and more precise on hard shifting compared to stock, the reason I choose it was the chrome stick and white cue ball (I had that on my 69 Camaro SS when I was younger), otherwise I would have seriously considered a MGW. I'll share a couple bits of advice; the NVH is increased dramatically so make sure you use the sound deadening material included in the kit, install a bushing upgrade kit (the stock poly bushings do not hold up) & buy another shift boot, (because you have to remove the chrome trim bezel which is glued on and you won't be able to re-use the boot if you want to reinstall the stock shifter) the only handle option with the kit is the chrome handle, it is not compatible with the "stock" ZL1/1LE GM short throw shift knob & shifter handle. I would say this is an easy project and I did the install and rework on jack stands (lifted front of car only)

The Hurst instructions show the standard Camaro shifter, not the short throw for the ZL1/1LE, FYI. I referenced this youtube video for the general install... And these instructions on how to remove the shift knob from the ZL1/1LE short throw shifter.... This shows the chrome trim ring is part of the boot VS being zip tied like the standard Camaro shifter... Hope this helps...

On a standard Camaro shifter yes...NOT ON A ZL1/1LE shifter... the chrome trim ring and shift knob are not the same, the chrome trim ring on the ZL1/1LE shifter is GLUED to the shift boot not zipped tied like the standard Camaro shifter.

The OEM adapter in my Hurst kit has the slot and tapped mounting hole shown for the ZL-1 / 1LE. The boot connects to the stock shift knob itself so it should all mount back up.
I tried to take a picture of the OEM adapter but it's black on black and I can't get a decent shot of it, it's too hard to see. |
