By the way, listen to PSJ's exhaust setup. Close to what you're after.

If you want a mild sounding exhaust with power, go with long tube headers with cats and the stock catback exhaust. The long tubes will give you plenty of extra low end power, but will give you good mid range and upper power too. The cats will knock the rasp out of the exhaust, and the stock catback will tame the sound down so that it isn't too loud on the outside.

If you want to go with shorty headers, definitely get high flow cats. Solo and JBA are two of the more popular brands (I personally love Solo's products). I had shorty headers and with stock cats they basically do nothing, add a little bass in the exhaust tone, but not really much of anything. Again, the cats will knock the rasp out of the exhaust sound, and give you more low end power. However, if you have eliminated the resonator and mufflers, this set up will get a little loud.

Ultimately the main bottleneck of the Camaro's stock exhaust are the cats. They muffle sound and choke power. If you want more power and don't want to go with long tube headers then go with high flow cats. You'll be amazed at the extra power.

I went with the mbrp three inch cat back before longtubes and the sound was a nice deep tone but not much volume. With longtubes and hi flow cats it sounds very deep and just the right amount of growl. I think the factory system is two and a half inch and ones i have heard with longtubes and hi flow cats have some nascar rasp when opened up.
