How to eliminate snap power oversteer on the ZL1?
Hi Guys,
I'm new to the ZL1 S.C. power, (my prior car was a N.A. V8 with a std. transmission). After driving my ZL1 w/. autom. transm. Immediately I noticed that while taking a corner, is very common to have a snap power oversteer while in 2nd. gear. I was curious about this and noticed on the web that some driver/writers for well known magazines also noticed this issue. What can be done to correct this issue? Please advise

Less throttle should do the trick.

Yes I suppose, but I was expecting the T.C. to steep in, but seems like the power of the ZL1 over kill the nannies.

Seriously......maybe a different front tire or some Detroit suspension mods. This is common with cars producing 500 +HP!! Last edited by Harley01; 01-02-2016 at 04:48 PM. |

Might try a 315 rear tire or maybe a narrower front tire.
I am betting the dumb Motortrend review was referring to the oversteer when the nannies are off or on Race. Set them to 2 or 3 and I doubt you will have any issues stock with oversteer. There is no way you will be pushing the car like Randy Pobst does... |

It is not suspension transition oversteer, it's the engine breaking the rear tires loose that rotates the car. The ZL1 understeers a bit. The ZL1 can overpower the traction control quite easily. The only solution, care with the throttle when cornering, especially below 60 degrees F, or full time drag radials.
This is the same problem that did in my twin turbo 1LE. The Goodyears were on.

Easiest and cheapest solution. Pull spark plug wires until problem stops.

Yes I believe that the ZL1 overpowers the T.C. probably some wider rear 315's MPSS would take care of it or swaybars. On my prior 5.0 the T.C. did not allowed the back to steep out, even when it was raining, but I had only 412 HP.

In order for standard traction control to work, it must allow some wheel slip; this is how it measures coefficient of friction and estimates available traction. The problem is that even a moderate amount of wheel slip is problematic when cornering.
You have a couple of options: 1) Learn how to apply the throttle smoothly in order to avoid wheel slip. This is a good skill to learn; it comes in handy when driving RWD vehicles. 2) Use the appropriate PTM setting. This avoid the need for excessive wheel slip to generate an estimate of traction, since you are providing this information via the selected setting. Simply picking a stickier tire is unlikely to help, since you'll inevitably find situations where this is inadequate. It's also not a suspension problem, so save your money. It's ultimately a driver problem; you have control over a 580 HP RWD vehicle that had a forward weight bias and a traditional limited-slip differential, so throttle discipline is important. |

Just echoing what E. Bryant stated. Give yourself more time to learn the car completely. It is mainly throttle control. Yes the car will overpower traction control. Wider tires won't change a thing. Save your money.

It will change with the temperature , how cold the tires are , and the pavement conditions and any moment and time , so like others have said above , pay attention to those guide lines and learn about what to expect from the car on a variety off conditions , control your right foot and you will be fine

Driver mod - upgraded left foot.
Way I was taught, think of a string connected from the steering wheel to the accelerator pedal. f you are in a turn you can't use much throttle and vice versa, on the throttle the steering wheel has to be straight. Nice thing is it works with all cars |
