You are indeed correct but I think it's limited to a few trim levels (lower trim levels)

Funny thing. My wife looks at cars like she does an appliance; purely a utilitarian product. She loves the Vette, but would never get something like that herself. So, she never sends me anything about cars...except she just sent me a link to the announcement for the Cruze hatchback.

I think she's finally coming around.

Maybe, but a compact hatchback is possibly the most practical vehicle type on the market. Small and efficient, yet has ample room for stuff in the back and can carry Mom, Dad, and a couple kids with ease, and costs less than a similar crossover or larger car.

I agree. She's been looking at crossovers to replace the sonic. I think the Cruze hatch would be a better option. Maybe this is a sign she's coming around.

Just to be clear, I had a Cruze and loved it. She made me get rid of it because she wanted a Ford Focus (and we didn't need 4 vehicles). The Focus is a good car (she hated the DCT), but I would still rather have the Cruze unless I could get the Focus RS.

Will somebody please explain me why "class leading wheelbase" is even relevant?

More back seat space...

Funny thing is Ford mentions the Focus RS's shorter wheelbase as an advantage for nimbleness. But......very different cars obviously.

Wheelbase is not necessarily an indicator of rear seat space or interior space. I can have a larger rear overhang on the same wheelbase and have more room. A longer wheel base can allow more width in the rear seat and more rear seat leg room IF I only move the rear seat rearward with the rear axle. Bit I could also use that for more front seat room by moving the front seat back too.

Big advantage is for ride. A shorter wheel base will turn better for handling but likely not a big deal.

Oh and I read that off of this longer WB GM achieved 5 cu ft LESS than the focus and Golf, two key competitors.

I had seen some older pics of a supposed Cruze 5dr hatchback and it looked hideous. This car really looks good. Definitely styled to compete well in the segment. Now it only remains to be seen whether they will give the RS version real teeth to make it a player in the hot hatch market or if it will all be for looks only. It definitely needs to get the 2.0L turbo. Preferably at the 270hp level. Even if the car is only front wheel drive it would immediately be a competitor for top of the class.

Sharp, sharp, sharp! I'll be trading my '13 Cruze RS and will be leasing another one in August. This is intriguing.

GM does have a special talent for making cars feel much smaller on the inside than you would think they are based on the exterior dimensions of the car.

Looks weird to me. Hopefully GM will jump into the hot hatch market. The ST will be hard to beat though, those things are fun!
