Exposed Carbon Fiber Hood Insert vs Black Hood Insert
Am I correct in saying that the majority of owners, all years of the current ZL1, purchased the Exposed Carbon Fiber Hood as opposed to the standard Black Hood Insert?

This would be a good poll.
My ZL1 came with the exposed carbon fiber hood vent.

Yeah, still thinking about it. There is one that I just found with the Black hood insert, they are offering me $41k for the Corvette, which is a good number. But, I sure do love my Vette.

This Z I just bought had the black insert and I told the dealer I did not want it unless it had the exposed carbon fiber on it. He said I will put one on it for you then. He said I will order it and when it comes in you can pick the car up.I said fine. He called me the next day and he just about crapped his pants when he told me how much they were [I knew what they cost so I knew he would be calling me when he found out] and he said he could not do that. Anyway, he let me have it for 1200 bucks. I would not have a Z without it as I think they just make the car what it is. If you buy a Z I suggest you get one with it on it because if you have to buy one they are very expensive.

The ZL1's were first made avail to order Nov. 2011 and production started in Jan. 2012. Initially Exposed Inserts were available with the first allocations/orders. In Feb. for the second round of allocations/orders Exposed Inserts were on constraint. GM did not figure that many people would buy the $600.00 option. By the third round of allocations in March the Exposed Inserts were off of constraint but the painted hoods were now on constraint. GM stepped up to the plate at this point and made the Exposed Insert a no charge option for 2012 ZL1's because the painted ones were not available. Mine was made in Mar. with the exposed insert which was how I ordered it in Nov. Just a bit of trivia on exposed inserts.

Had it ordered online and changed my mind because I didn't like it as much on the black. After my car arrived I started having second thoughts and was shocked to find out when I went to the parts dept that what was a $600 option is $5400 after the fact. Holy crap!

In shopping for them, I found more without exposed hoods, but don't know if that's because more dealerships ordered them because they were trying to keep the price down, or ? As far as preference, definitely prefer the exposed (and have it and love it), but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. What year/model vette are you thinking about trading? What is your usage - track, daily driver, fun weekender? |

You had better find another dealer as they were trying to screw you on that price. |

Mines black, that's how she came so it wasn't a deal breaker for me. I honestly like the looks of both of them. I had a guy insist that mine was plastic while the exposed CF ones were the only CF inserts... So I popped my hood and surprise... CF :-)
