ZL1 throwing codes

Over a month ago I went ahead and cleaned my CAI intake and also re-oiled it. Within a few days of this the car started throwing two codes, P0171 and P0174, which is system too lean in bank 1 and 2. My first thought was that I must have put too much oil and that MAF sensor was now dirty. I bought MAF sensor cleaner, disconnected the battery and cleaned the MAF sensor. The code went away and I thought I fixed the problem. However a few days later both codes reappeared. Cleaned it again, codes went away and again reappeared a few hours later. Both of these codes come and go with them disappearing if I don't drive the car for a day or two and then reappearing after 3-4 days of driving. Does my tune and fuel mapping causing this issue because now my filter is cleaner? Or does it sound like a faulty MAF? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Logic suggests that you started out with a clean filter and no codes ... There was no problem at that time... Problem became when You cleaned the filter...

I would check for leaks/unmetered air in the CAI assembly ... Depending on how far apart you needed to tear it down to get the filter off...

You could try a new filter... One you haven't oiled

Lastly I would try a new MAF... You might have ruined it

I always let my filters sit out for a couple days preferably someplace warm to dry out after getting a new one or cleaning and oiling

Whether it does anything or not don't know

My car does the exact same thing. My car is a 2012 with cai, ported blower, headers, tune, 2.38 ? pulley. All work done by formato who I'm am calling tomorrow to ask him if he has any idea what's going on. I bought car a year ago and this issue started about a month ago when it started getting cold in florida.my car runs pig rich and the engine light comes on during any driving condition, it once came on when I simply started the car. The dealer had the car last Friday and Checked for codes and said everything was fine. Everytime engine light comes on for those codes I have them cleared at local auto parts store but it says permanent codes on screen when erasing them. I'll keep you posted after I speak to formato. By the way does your car have mods besides cai?

You're not too rich. You are too lean. Both of you need to monitor the fuel trims and the O2 sensors to see what's going on. If there isn't an air leak somewhere in the intake tube or a vacuum leak then the problem is in your tune.
If you are getting both codes, P0171 and P0174, then it is a problem that affects both sides of the engine. So it's unlikely both O2's fail at the same time. Same goes for a bad injector, not likely to be on both sides. Could be the fuel. Were your cars tuned with different fuel than you run now? More or less ethanol content?

I agree with a few of the other posts here, it definitely sounds like you have unmetered air coming in. I would take the CAI off and reassemble it making sure it's snug and no air can get in anywhere after the MAF.

You didn't possibly over-oil the filter after cleaning it?
With my Rotofab, the cleaning kit specified exactly the amount of oil you were to apply.

So that is a concern of mine. Problem is that I've cleaned the sensor now twice (can't really tell if it's dirty from oil or not) and the problem comes back in a few days. I'm not sure though how long will the over-oiled filter keep affecting the MAF sensor. Does it keep affecting it until it's re-cleaned and oiled, or does it subside quickly.

Using the same fuel from when it was tuned. No air leaks or vacuum leaks that I can find (used carb cleaner and sprayed around). Narrowed it down to MAFS or filter is still over-oiled (even though it's been 2 months)

I'm running CAI, LT headers, tune, and 18%OD upper pulley. Again though all this happened a few days after I cleaned the filter and oiled it.

If you still think it's from the oil, best bet is to clean it again and then re-oil it much lighter. That will narrow down whether it's excess oil or a faulty or clogged MAF.

Went ahead and bought a replacement filter and i've gone 3 days without the codes popping up. Will update again once it's been a week.

Just keeping this updated:

I went 1 week without codes throwing and then one of the codes showed P0174. By the afternoon though the code was gone. It's been 3 days since then. I have a new MAF sensor ready to go in but i'm going to keep the old one in unless the code pops up again.

Oil ruins MAF sensors.
