Rear Ended, Is damage Fixable?

My 2011 2LT was slammed into on December 17th. I only have liability insurance and same for the guy who hit me. Looks like after I collect his $5000 property damage and my gap insurance covers the gap, I'll be left with 8-9k on the loan. Haven't had the chance to get under the car and inspect the suspension myself so was wondering what everyones initial thoughts are concerning the damage? I'm just trying to get the car back on the road so that I don't have to tow it everywhere. I believe that I just need to replace the shock assembly, control arms and a few other parts to straighten out the wheel. I'll need a new rim and tire as the rim is split in half. I haven't checked the brake caliper and rotor as of yet. Currently waiting to get the car towed to my fathers house to inspect the damage. Has anyone had a similar accident? What should I be most concerned about in regards to the repair? I'm all ears!

Anytime you have a car loan your suppose to have full coverage insurance. Especially, on a car this expensive. Liability insurance sucks for a reason.

His liability insurance should cover your repairs if the accident was his fault. That's what liability is for.

I thought if you got a loan you had to have full coverage? Not just liability

That's what I was told by the dealership and my insurance agent.

And, Yes if he is not at fault the other insurance company will pay, however, since it's liability they will fight so they don't have to pay. Also, if he had full coverage insurance his car would be in the shop right now being fixed and then they would be working on figuring out whos paying for what, plus he would have a rental car as well.

So you have a car note and you only have liability? I know it's not cool to kick someone while they're down but why would you do this?

Yes, the damage is fixable. However how do you know he only has $5K in damage coverage? Usually "property" is stuff like mailboxes, fences etc. He'll most likely have way more for actual automobile coverage...if not your state is more messed up than we all thought lol

Just call his insurance company, his liability will cover it, that's the point of it

OP: Why are you towing it to your father's house? Are you or him physical
damage experts? IMO get it to a body shop for a proper inspection by them
and the 3rd parties insurance company. The car has extensive mechanical
and body damages. The other carrier also owes you a rental car during the
time your car is being repaired, not while its sitting in a relatives driveway.

^^^^ Those are all assuming the OP was not at fault. If the OP did it, discounting the fact he didn't have full coverage, the OP would be responsible for the damage.

Either case, take that to a shop to be properly evaluated. Almost any reputable shop will give you a free, complete estimate of the work and parts needed to repair it. A couple of pictures in a discussion forum will not provide good evaluation.

People on here are correct, if you have a loan on the car you're supposed to carry full coverage. Mine is still under the loan (not for much longer) and I maintain full coverage even though she is stored through the winter, I was able to remove liability while in storage though I had to send pictures of the car in storage.

Since the OP hasn't responded I'm assuming so. If he is at fault he's screwed.
