Well if thats the case...My theory about the Camaro might be true: -" Like dogs, Camaros only have one owner."

But one question remains unanswered. Who has the key? The impound should have it...what did they told you?

"Probably" being the key word here. The lowlife who bought it, or possibly the myriad of thugs he owes money to, know it was never properly registered. They know where to look. Tenacious little bastards. He's in jail. That is the most likely reason the car was where it was. I'm sure he'll never think to look up the OP A simple VIN search will bring up everything. But that's just me being parinoid. Not everybody thinks like me.

i didnt read the whole thread but have the police check the car for drugs. Sound to me like the car was bought to haul drugs.

You need to get the Police Case ID# from the Towing company and call the police station who caught him and call them. They will know where to find him if he's lockup.

The Original signed title trumps a duplicate title, in almost all cases. If you go after this car and the dude you sold it to comes back after it with the original title, you will be returning the car to him, now or 50 years from now. I also assume he has a bill of sale from you, which would be strike 2. I'd stay away, unless you just want to take a chance on the loss of $1,700 and the chance he'll never show back up again.
