If I posted everytime a cager almost ran me into a wall or pulled out in front of me there would be a post daily. Dont get me wrong there are some squid bikers out there but for every squid theres about 3000 dumb ass cagers drinking their latte, texting and taking selfies too.

When the lane splitter is about 3 car lengths back you open your door to empty out your ash tray or something. Give him enough room to stop, but not enough to keep him from getting pissed about it.
In my town they have an annual event called "Thunder by the Bay", which is akin to Bike Week in Daytona. While last year's event was going on I was at a red light and a group of about 30 of them lined up in one lane. When the light turned green the lead guy moved over to the next lane, purposely driving slow and holding back traffic so the others could have the whole road to themselves. This was obviously his "role" in the group because he had a big orange flag on the back of his bike, and did it at every light for the five miles or so that I was behind them. Finally they all got in the turning lane to head to the event, but they were at the wrong street. They soon realized this, so when the light turned green they all just cut right back into traffic until they found the right intersection. Naturally, they were unnecessarily revving their engines the whole time, on a Sunday morning. I just kept thinking of that Southpark episode with the bikers. It's because of a-holes like this that the city leaders are considering ending future events. Not all bikers are bad, but it only takes a few bad apples.

FYI, lane splitting is not legal in CA. The law states that 2 vehicles can occupy the same lane simultaneously as long as at least one of the vehicles is limited to 2 wheels and the faster moving vehicle is not going more than 5 mph over the average flow of traffic.

well technically speaking, lane splitting is not legal nor is it illegal. the fact is there is no law stating it is legal, nor any law stating it is illegal. you can be cited for other things while lane splitting such as: illegal lane change unsafe lane change unsafe lane sharing passing on the right failing to signal speeding etc. been down that road, cited for illegal lane change and failing to signal because I was lane splitting, which inherently makes you wobble between 2 lanes over the line back and forth. been riding for 35 years, it is what it is, there are arsehole bikers and arsehole cagers, everyone thinks they own the road they are driving down and no one has tolerance for anyone around them.

yep feel your pain, every dude and his brother owns a bike around here. they just clog up the roads and drive excruciatingly slow. can't pass them on the open road because they ride in large groups and make it impossible to pass them. when they have mountain fest around here I just try to get out of town just to avoid the whole pain in the rear end!

My three years in San Diego I refused to split lanes. Never saw a point in putting everyone including myself in danger.

The first time I ever went to Cali, I flew into San Diego and headed for Mexicali in a rental car. No one told me anything about lane splitting. I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic at about 3 mph and I cracked my door open to pour out a drink. About 20 seconds later s guy on a ninja came flying by my car at what looked to me to be about 25-30 mph and scared the living shit out of me.
If he had been a few seconds earlier he would have eaten my door. With all the tourists coming into California I can't help but think it's a stupid thing to do even if it is legal. |

Lane splitting dates back to when all bikes were air-cooled, requiring them to stop in traffic would overheat them.
