Driving In Heavy Rain
Yes, I drove it in the (pouring) rain and with the trofeos no less. Mostly uneventful really. Squirrelly at highway speeds and big puddles, but what car isn't. After reading all the journal articles, I expected it to be much worse.
Tires psi only increased by maybe 1psi all around, even after 30 mins of hwy driving. The brakes don't like to be wet, they required noticeably more pedal effort. Much more affected than other performance braking systems I've had before. Found myself riding the brakes periodically to try and dry them. It was literally pouring rain the entire time, so extreme circumstances. Tried PTM 1 for fun. I could turn from a stop light and accelerate with zero drama. Never felt the diff kick in or have any detectable wheel spin. I am still in the break in period so I wasn't pushing crazy hard. Still, on cold tires, drenched streets, and an LS7, I expected some wheel slip. Interestingly, I've never had a car with this much legitimate downforce and wide tires. You could really see the water being kicked up behind the car at highway speeds. Good visual indicator of how much air this thing is moving around. Long story short, it's nothing to be afraid of, as long you aren't doing anything crazy. |

I'm not going to take out someone else to learn my tire's limits in the rain.

the trofeos will hydroplane like a slick at speeds above 75mph and will cause a 4 wheel drift if the water is deep enough...very scary. I agree at slower speeds there is nothing to worry about. Just be careful and don't get over confident.

I agree with that. I doubt I got above 50, but I wouldn't drive much faster in that kind of rain in my DD Honda either. I was somewhat expecting it to be undrivable with any kind of appreciable moisture, but it did fine.

Don't be too confident with those dry weather Trofeo Rs in the rain. There is a reason F1 has intermediate and wet weather tires.

Hmmm, here in Tulsa its sunny days only; so I've have to live vicariously through those of you driving in the rain...

I like the practice of taking the car out to an empty parking lot for some light drifting under various conditions, just to get the feel of how the car behaves at its limit and where the limit is.
Heavy rain is great opportunity. If you can spend some time in an empty lot under such a condition and remember how the car behaves, it can significantly improve your safety.
