Hearing nothing from GM so far, I have begun submitting the issue to local network news affiliates. I will put forward the story to several stations and hope for a bite. I have done this in the past and have succeeded in getting three different issues aired on the major network stations in the Seattle area.

I will keep you all posted.

Based on what I'm seeing on GM Global, not only did they block that job from being completed, they restricted his entire Powertrain Warranty! With no proof that the catch can is the cause of the issue. I'm getting nowhere with "WHY". My service mgr is going to make some calls after 8am

I was going to stay out of this thread, but in this case "proof" is not required. The only time proof is required is if a OEM part is replaced with a third party OE spec part, such as a water pump. In this case the catch can was an addition/modification to an OEM system. All that's required is that there was an unauthorized addition of a non OE part.

So if this is true, it is not the dealer denying warranty, it is GM.................wow!

So this would seem to indicate that if I throw a rod and spin a few bearings from an oil pump failure, it's the fault of the "non OE" carbon fiber hood vent I just installed? And I'm on my own? Where does it end?

Have to agree with Moto-Mojo. If there's no cause and effect relationship between the parts, how can Chevy refuse to repair under warranty? The CC is tied into the EGR system more so than the oiling system. Would a change in tire size lead to a refusal to repair/replace a broken axle or rear end?

But this is exactly the sort of sentiment that car enthusiasts have to push back against and why Magnuson Moss is a thing. When we purchase the car, we have every right to modify at will - it is not GM's property anymore. In the case of warranty coverage, some modifications/additions are a clear cause for loss of warranty and some are totally unrelated (case in point). If we weren't "authorized" to install non OE parts, then an entire industry would not exist and every bolt would need to be turned by a GM tech, in a GM shop.

As a manufacture, they need to draw a line when it comes to additions/modifications. Every manufacture does, why should GM be any different. Even third party shops like Callaway, Rousch will void their warranties if you add/modify their systems.

Nobody is saying you can't make additions or modifications to your cars, but if you do it's on you.

I tend to be of this opiniion as well. Once we tinker with the car we are heading into risky territory. My car is tuned and I did that expecting if something failed it would be on me. I still take my car to my dealer for things as I think building a good relationship with the service people there may help me one day or perhaps it won't....

While this catch can situation is unfortunate I think it allows GM the wiggle room to deny warranty. But as I said before I still feel this is on the dealer for running the car with no oil pressure and doing the real damage.

That's really what we hope to nail down here. We just need to be very clear. Especially when it comes to catch cans that so many cars have.
