If your oil pump failed, when?

Read a couple of days ago that most oil pump failures, the relief valve sticking and starving the engine of oil, happened at start up.

If yours failed was it at start up, shortly there after or driving around?

Just a bit curious.

Have to go back and look, but it was around 3 or 4 years ago. Replaced under warranty. Mine was only leaking, not a complete failure, thank goodness.

I assume the oil press gauge goes to zero after failure? I always cross check the gauges. How long can the engine survive after failure?

I asked in another thread and didn't get an answer.

What is the normal oil pressure range in an LS3?

I don't know, but I'm hoping some guys here let us know how long theirs ran after the light and how the engine fared. Or how fast they shut it off and the damage.

2010 ls3 with exactly 15k miles at 10 pm when ready to leave work. Failed at startup and said something like "low oil pressure. Shut engine down immediately"

Thanks for the response.

Was any damage done to the engine?

Always will be a tricky problem anytime you have this style oil pump that drives directly off the crankshaft. Has to be much more precise compared to the old style gear or shaft driven pumps.

Be meticulous with oil changes and engine work. Don't leave the oil fill cap off if dusty/windy. Keep particulates out of the oil!

I've hit the lottery. 2013 1SS, first time Jan '15 at 30250miles . Again last Saturday, at 51700 miles. Currently at dealer and they are tearing down the engine to look for damage.

*edit - both times happened after 3-4 hour cool down.
