Depending on several unknowns, I don't think this car (Z/28) will out lap a Z07 Corvette. If it has NA engine, likely no more than 550 HP and I don't think that does the trick.

Now the big thing we don't know is - how much WEIGHT is being pulled out of this car? CF Hood, CF Front Fenders, thin glass, stripped interior, blocked content?

What if this is a 550 HP car with all the upgrades for the track that weighs, oh say, the same a base 4 cylinder Camaro? But that car would still be 100 HP down on a Z07.

So I predict 3 seconds slower than the Z07. So low 7:20s.

How much of a hassle would be be to have carbon fibre or even aluminum front fenders on the Z/28? I know that there would be the added tooling cost and could cause some assembly annoyance. But what about in terms of crash testing or other structural considerations? Is it fairly easy to work through that or does that pile on tons of extra cost for a manufacturer to replace a panel like that?

It's just a bit of tooling money to GM but a piece price impact to the customer. Level of difficulty today is not high. My team did GM's first CF hood on the C5 Z06 LeMans SE almost 15 years ago now. First CF fenders an roof bow and roof panel fir the first Z06 almost 10 years ago.

Interesting.

I had it in my head that fenders are a fairly important structural member in a unibody (vs Corvettes spaceframe) design -particularly with regards to absorbing crash energy. And that changing it would require retesting the car, which can't be cheap. On the other hand, hoods, roofs, door skins, trunk lids, fascias ... all those seem like they're just there to keep the rain out and the air flowing nicely.

Structure is all under the fenders. Just for show, shape and holding paint.

Remember the Gen4 Camaro had plastic fenders.

That makes it a lot more likely that it could happen. And I've got a feeling that if the Camaro team tries to cut weight again, they're going to focus on the front half of the car. And aluminum or CF fenders would take quite a bit of weight off the front end.

Is it true the GT350 front fenders are aluminum? If so I believe the Z/28 will do the same or use CF.

Yes. Depending on the crash upper and lower structures, engine cradle and chassis.

Note in the IIHS tests the front wheels and controls arms are torn off. That can could be used to manage energy in a crash.
