Straight 87

Has anyone ran 87 octane gasoline exclusively in their ZL1? It seems that I am constantly doing fuse pulls due to getting stuck with gasoline that is not 93 octane. I am tired of doing fuse pulls. I can tell when I put gasoline in my car that isn't the 93 octane that it is supposed to be. The ECM does in fact pull timing, I can tell.

I believe the owners manual says it will run on 87 but is not recommended. We only have 91 here. Don't you have higher octane available?

Sure, it is available. But I believe many stations pass off 87 as 93.

You could start monitoring your kr and see how it reacts and try different stations.

From the owner manual.

Required Fuel (ZL1 Only)
If the vehicle has the 6.2L V8 engine
(VIN Code P), use premium
unleaded gasoline with a posted
octane rating of 91 or higher. For
best performance, use premium
unleaded gasoline with a posted
octane rating of 93. You can also
use regular unleaded gasoline rated
at 87 octane or higher, but the
vehicle's acceleration could be
slightly reduced, and a slight audible
knocking noise, commonly referred
to as spark knock, might be heard.
If the octane rating is less than 87, a
heavy knocking noise might be
heard when driving. If this occurs,
use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or
higher as soon as possible.
Otherwise, you could damage the
engine. If heavy knocking is heard
when using gasoline rated at
87 octane or higher, the engine
needs service.

For the amount of money we pay for our ZL1's, in my opinion. using anything less than 91 octane top tier gas is just asking for trouble.

91 is 'OK' but if 93 is available, I'd use that.

Also, you can find a list of what they refer to as 'Top Tier' gas can be found here.

Arizona has 87, 89, 91 octane and in some places 100 octane fuel available as well as E85.

Be careful of the 100 octane or racing fuel, it may contain lead.

That's cool then, you could mix it. I don't think anyting over 95 will help with the stock tune.

What gas are you using? I put nothing but Shell 93 in my car and haven't run into any problems. I use a station right next to the outer belt that's always busy.

I assume there is more kr with lower octane gas, correct? If so, when will that KR show... full throttle or all the time?

Supercharged motor..... run 91 and above only. Heck the ZL1 is the only Camaro model (except maybe the Z28) that has a "PREMIUM ONLY" sticker inside the gas door. Anything less is bad news. If I had to run lower octane I would stay out of the boost till it was gone. WOT on 87 or 89 is asking for broken engine parts. BTW GM could very well void a warranty over it too.

Why would you do this? I have never been to a gas station that did not have at least 91.

get some torco... i have JRE 75 RWHP with headers 96 octane tune,
i had the same set up with 91 and diff is night and day pulls much harder
and runs smoother to.. you could just add enough torco to get you to 93..
