Yes, the prototype was called the panther...but the Car became unveiled as the "Camaro". it was then that GM executives were asked "what is a Camaro?"...

It's just a tongue and cheek definition of Camaro that the executives said on the fly all in fun, and it's stuck around ever since.

Wow, the Camaro expert has spoken...LOL, didn't mean to upset you. And yes, salesmen know everything about every car so excuse me for trying to add to the explanation od where the saying came from. LOL. I've worked in dealerships for over 30 years so saying salesmen know the history of the cars they sell doesn't hold much water with me. Most don't know about the current models let alone the history of them. Sorry I didn't fully agree with your version of the story. Now I'm not an expert on Camaro history but I do know a thing or two about them. Especially first gens,.

BTW, I knew more about my Camaro when I bought it than any salesman or any other employee the place.
