You have to actually subscribe to Onstar and have the service activated before your car snitches on you true? In other words, there's no backdoor way for your car to still send data to GM without you knowing?

Oh absolutely. There's no way GM is relying on you to pay for their spying services.

It makes absolute perfect sense that when there is a problem with the car, the dealer will pull as much diagnostic information from the car as possible & look for things that are out of whack. And so if you have a persistent (or multiple) issues with your McLaren (or any other car for that matter), and take it into a dealer for service ... why wouldn't you expect them to plug into the OBDII and download and and all data they can?

In the case of the Porsche, even though it went in because of a recall, the data can still be used to get more details about the causes and/or effects of the known issue so that it can be prevented or mitigated in future cars.
i thought it said porsche went in for steering recall...

I'm just saying...it isn't ethical IMO. Even if black box data is required to do a specific service, only the data needed should be accessed. The Mclaren..."you did 212 MHP on what track?" seems like they are looking at data they didn't need to, if so why bring up the where?

Maybe I'm being unrealistic, but as a systems and network engineer I have the keys to the kingdom at my organization, doesnt mean i should access the CEO's email.

Yeah, I was going to say that I recall seeing a top speed logged somewhere in my Buick's menus.

It's definitely not national secret level stuff nowadays.
