Upgrading Sound System Options
I'd like to upgrade my sound, but I don't have any stowing room. Has anyone put subs and better speakers in their verts without taking away from the already small trunk space that we have?

I got a 10w7 and the sub thump box after attempting to reuse the rear seat. I modified the rear panels like the post above to put 6 1/2 components in the rear. For the headunit since I don't have a BA system I got a JL audio cleansweep and just use the direct aux in.
If I would do if all over again, I'd replace the head unit with a kit and potentially revisit putting the sub in the rear seat. Initially it sounds pretty bad, but I never got to fully test it on the cleansweep aux input. Words of wisdom...... - don't attempt the PAC adapter people talk about all over the forums. For the love of god don't try it. I ended up stealing the harness from it, but the unit was shit. - if you put the sub in the trunk remove the foam backed rubber behind the rear seat and the foam behind the rear seat to stop it from dampening sound. - if you need to do it on the cheap get a signal processor like the cleansweep or Memphis audio and only listen to music on the AUX port. I found this out the hard way and blew my first sub. Which is why I upgraded to the 10w7. Directly connected to the AUX port I can have my gains set to 1/3 of what it had to be set at through the head unit. One day I might go through all the wires and triple check my install, but I've done enough of these over the years to know when to just say screw it and replace the head unit. Good luck.

I'm a little hesitant hearing about these noises from using the factory head unit. I'd really like to utilize my stock unit. I just want better sound quality past the 25 mark, while driving with the top down.
Most songs past 25 will sound a little distorted and the bass is unpredictable from song-to-song.

The sound system in the Camaro is not the best by far... If I had to do anything, I think I'd upgrade the speakers first, then move on from there... at least that is my plan..
Do you guys know what size speaker is installed in the front doors? And has anyone gone to a 2 way for these??? Last edited by GodWentPunk; 07-19-2016 at 12:05 PM. |

If you get yourself a signal processor with an external input, you'll be able to toggle back and forth between your music and the stock head unit. This is less than idea since you have to have an external volume knob, but its the cleanest option with the stock head unit. Bluetooth/USB/AUX > Mylink > Speaker outputs > Signal Processor > Amp AUX > Signal Processor > AMP After a few weeks with the external volume knob it doesn't bother me at all. The trick is to connect your phone to the USB so you can control it from the stock head unit, but then connect the AUX cord so send the audio to the signal processor.

Do you know if we need either 4 or 8 ohm speakers?? and I think the existing are mids... would you go with mids again or get a 2-way even though the tweeters are already on the top of the door???

For the rears I cut away some of the rear panels so it would fit a 6.5 and tweeter.

For my BA system, it looks like my best place to start is a 5 channel amp with the S.T. harness. I will see how this goes and report back.

Does that single sub hit pretty hard? That is where I am still stuck - whether or not to replace the stock with a better sub or go with a separate box in the trunk. I would prefer to stick with the stock location because I use my entire trunk frequently. Nervous about how it would sound though. Was the stock location deep enough?
Thank you. -Geoff
