Yes... I looked a little closer at one of the pic's and noticed the "little" forktruck in the foreground. I don't care what it goes in... my camaro isn't getting that!

Supposedly Chris Fesler said he is going to make an IRS that can handle 1500 HP. I tried to contact him about it but have not heard back yet. I hope it is valid. It will save me some extra work. I will post here if I hear more.

I have a feeling I know what he is going to try and do. Really the only thing left to tackle is the actual differential, and its durability. Which I am working along side RPM and a racer of our to do some testing.

There are axles available that will hold the power, with in 2-3 weeks there will be Chromoly and alumnium single piece drive shafts, there are solid bushings, and such as well. The down side verus this solid rear setup is just that, its still IRS

Regards

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you guys. Between race season and getting the new shop up and running, and doing research on this project has been an uphill struggle to say the least.

I posted a thread in the wheels and tires section under 12 bolt upgrade. We have been doing some market and mechanical research regaurding on which way we want to go with the upgrade. We have decided that a direct bolt in replacement 12 bolt center section to upgrade the IRS is going to be first and foremost. Solid axle is going to come later.

The major problem has been getting our hands on a housing to digitize the mounting points so that we can start building the core box for the housing. So if one of you guys has a spare or a camaro that is down I would be more than happy to pay the shipping to get my hands on one so that I can get one digitized and get the ball rolling. I will also offer the volunteer a deep discount on the housing once they are available.

tenative plans are for a nodular iron and a aluminum version of the cases. minimum 33 spline posi units/ chromoly stubs. We will be also looking to upgrade the axle shafts and outer stubs shortly thereafter. After we have the IRS nailed down we will proceed with a solid axle conversion.

Problem is with the solid axle the sub will need to be replaced along with the fuel tank and exhaust. Making it a difficult and expensive proposistion. This is better left to the body in white camaros or the more hardcore racers.

We are hoping to have a prototype and pricing by PRI. (Early December.)

Regaurds,

Ken

I'm no expert, but Motor Trend says that "the solid rear axle is better for a drag race" line is a myth. Don't know why you would want to switch away from IRS if that's the case. Here's the article where they talk about it.

The Ford's big problem is traction. The rock-hard Goodyear Eagle F1 tires grip about as well as a pair of bowling balls, and you have to feather the gas otherwise the GT500 will be left standing in a cloud of tire smoke as the Camaro simply digs in and grunts away. If you're not careful, the GT500's live rear axle hops and bangs and thumps, spitting the car sideways as the tires struggle for grip.

It's a core element of modern Mustang mythology that the GT500's S197 platform has a live rear axle because it delivers better traction on the drag strip. (And it is mythology -- several folks who worked at Ford have since revealed the S197 was originally planned to have an independent rear end, and that the drag race traction story was PR spin designed to deflect media criticism of the car's stone-age rear suspension). But even if the GT500 was fitted with Pirelli PZeros like the Camaro, we're not convinced it could match the Chevy's off-the-line grip.

Ok you are talking about with mustangs vs camaro's...i thought you were talking about dragracing in general.

http://www.fays2.net/fays2_watts_link_13_.html

n a drag racing environment the live axle is king. From Top Fuel to pro Stock to bracket racing live axles are used because they are stronger (less parts to break) and they are tunable for weight transfer. Since many of the Mustang owners are into drag racing the IRS would offer no advantage. This is not to say that the IRS won't work on the drag strip but it certainly is at a disadvantage.
