Unusual Carbon Rotor Wear
I have changed front Rotor pads once and everything seemed normal. I just changed them for the second time (and first time for the rear) and I noted an unusual indentation into the front rotors. It looks like the pads put in a bead into the rotor. (See pictures). This happened on both sides of the rotor and on both front rotors. The result is that the cross section of the rotor where these indentations are is below the minimum thickness of the rotor. Anyone seen anything like this? What is the cause? Is this safe to race??? PS I only wore down the pads to around 5mm.

Mine original set was doing the same thing. I'm on my 2nd set of OEM front and rear pads now. Have the rotors weighed and see if they are above minimum weight. Curious..

Yes. Mine don't look as bad as yours do. Weigh them, looks like they are falling apart so therefore the resin has evaporated. You weigh them as a complete rotor assembly no need to disassemble.

Are you referring to the ring near the hub of the rotor? Also can we get a photo further back? I can't tell what is from the flash and what isn't. Lastly, are you sure they were the right pads? I am not sure if our calipers only fit one type of pad or not.

Just take it to the dealer and let them take care of it as it's still under warranty.

I would be interested in seeing others post what their rotors look like as reference.

I have the same groove, nothing touching the rotor at that spot so I believe it to be normal, think there is just more thickness to the braking surface area of the front rotors.

I have taken it to the dealer, but the service guy didn't really wanted to deal with it. Suggested to talk to the service manager. I plan to go there today. The pads I bought were p/n specific for the Z28. The original pads did not act in the same manner. The problem with this wear is that it's eating at the "root" of the rotor, so now it's way bellow minimum thickness and I will not race them with this type of wear. Will update after my discussion with the service manager. I believe it's a warranty claim.

I understand, but this particular situation looks like a mfr defect and not a typical characteristic of Carbon Ceramic brake wear, which are almost bullet proof - unless he's tracked the heck out of it.

I have that same inner ring on mine, and I am still on the original pads and have 6k miles on the car with several track and autocross days. I think that ring is normal.

Looks like you have worn those pads down to the rivets -not sure if they will warranty this "unusual" rotor wear for you.
