Damn, after Transformers I wanted to get yellow. After getting concept wallpapers from chevy.com/camaro I started considering silver. And now red is a strong contestant :(

Damn You Chevy for making this car look equally awesome in every color shown!

@Restarter: we won't be getting Camaro in Europe through local dealers (maybe except UK with wheel on the wrong side ) and we'll have to grab one through the big water on our own (OK, there're companies specialized in importing cars from US). And I hope it will be possible as soon as new Camaro becomes available in the US (february), AT MOST march '09. I can't wait any longer

Iam not trying to put the car down...its a beautiful car....legendary.....just wanted to get everyone elses opinion
The Corvette is built off of a totally different frame technology that uses something that more closely resembles a space frame with hydroformed rails. The only other car in the GM arsenal that use SOME of the same pieces of technolgy is the Solstice/Sky which is a $30k car with the larger 4 cylinder and doesnt have enough room in it to put a suitcase other than in the front seat. (But I happen to like them as well, just not practical for MY needs)

It was discussed in other threads that are buried in here somehwere, they looked at using the Vette/Solstice approach but then the car in a whole different price class.

Can't answer all the other bits yet, but I am sure that once the dust settles we will get more from Fbodfather and others.

DAMN CAFE!!!
With company's out there like gmmg you will see all kinds of special editions, almost as soon as the car hits the market. Trust me you see a ZL1, copa, berger ss, tom henry ss, etc. Gmmg is a great way for gm to get around the cafe which we dont worr about until 2020 anyways . I cant wait to see all the cool things people will do with this car, just look at all the cool stuff being done with the rustang.

I think you sumed it up pretty well. GM wants (and needs) to sell about 100,000 Camaros per year. To keep costs in line with those kinds of sales numbers, radical chasis engineering with extensive use of exotic materials and manfacturing procedures are completely out of the question. Also, cars like the Corvette are classified differently by the NHTSA, so things like curtain air bags and reinforced safety cages aren't required. At the same time, the buyer is aware of this and understands they are sacrificing on safety in the event of an accident.

The articles are reporting the RS pack will get you HID lights, spoiler, gauges on the center console, leather seats, and 20in wheels. We'll find out on Monday.
Due to the fact that the side sheetmetal is a one piece stamping which covers quarter panel to A piller, T-tops will never be an option. First time an F-body has ever been constructed this way. I am glad to see this design since it ads to body rigidity but ya, t-tops would have been a cool option.

Cities all over the country have been having to shell out mega, mega, MEGA bucks for 82,000 PSI jaws of life cutters and spreaders and hack saw cutters because the 40,000 PSI models that they have been using for years (work well even with the thick gauge steel used in cars from the 1950s) are absolutely no match for the solid beam reinforcements inside those roof supports and A and B pillars of today's cars. When you read "reinforced safety cage" under the standard safety feachers on the window sticker, they mean reinforced.

Look at crash test footage on new cars. The best cars in head on collisions absorb most of the collision in the front of the car, and the passenger compartment goes basically untouched. But you will notice, even on the most sever collisions, the frames around the windows and roof line are hardly even bent. There are seriously solid steel beams between the sheetmetal and interior plastic.

Imagine the roll cage in the General Lee, only integrated seamlessly and completely unnoticeable into the body structre.

I disagree. I can cut any car in half in 30 minutes using a household sawzall (especially a car that weighs less than 2 tons). 5 star does not necesarily mean the car has reinforced steel. It could also mean that the car has built in crumple zones that are designed to make the car fold up in a certain manner when an accident occurs. Volvo has a few videos out showing the entire process from design to analysis of crash test. More steel does not mean safer vehicle.

Peel off the sheetmetal, or easier than that, take off the plasic interior trim pieces (and remove the curtain airbags) around the windshield and above the doors, and I guarantee you will see solid steel beams, like rebar, inside the sheetmetal. Your "household sawzall" might be able to cut through ONE after an hour, but the blade will be turned into mush.

Crumple zones are part of the 5 star rating, but only part.

Those Volvos you refer to have solid steel beams as well. According to my uncle, cars today are VERY difficult to pry appart after an accident, even Civcs, Cobalts, and Corollas, but of course there are fewer injuries to the victims.

Firefighters and medics go through extensive training on this kind of thing, directly from manufacturers in many cases, so he knows what he's talking about. This applies to most cars built in the last 5 years or so.
Now, on an older car, your sawzall could hack through it in a half hour fine. I have no doubt about that. But not on a modern car.

Don't forget, what qualifies for a 5 star rating today is different from what qualified for a 5 star rating 10 years ago.

I'm sure Fbodfather could elaborate on this.

WOW - I think it looks great. I was really considering the Mustang Shelby but there is something about this car that is just beautiful + the better performance. My dream car has always been a first generation Camaro - I have a feeling it is going to be a 5th. Good work GM and great website.

I can't believe how much the Camaro weighs. After calling the Challenger a pig, u'm starting to think that the Camaro is becoming a little pigglet.
