What the hell do those gray vertical bars that sometimes appear under peoples usernames mean??

Also, is there a way you can have the system alert you if someone replies specifically to one of your posts? (For example, if I post a question in someone's thread and someone responds to that question. As opposed to subscribing to the thread and getting a notification wheneva anyone posts anything)

It's simply a graphical representation of how many posts a user has.

But I've seen some users with those bars with less posts than me, and I don't have any under mine... Do I have to turn that feature on?

That's because you've customized your user title. You can go back to the system default in User CP.
