Unlike the tempered side glass that shatters into a million pieces, the windshield is laminated glass. Has two pieces of glass with a plastic layer in between so if something breaks it won't end up in your lap like tempered glass would. A HUD windshield has a special light-redirecting optical film in the sandwich of glass.

HUD distorted

Just had a Safelite windshield replacement. The HUD is compressed 25% less in the horizontal such that when radio info comes up it can not be read. There are 4 NAGS part numbers for the 2011 Camaro that range from $980.20 to $689.15. They were supposed to use NAGS part number DW01901GTYN, list is $941.40 will find out later this week what they used as I told the insurance company to hold payment.

Safelite Replacement

In order to pass safety inspection, I recently had to replace mine and I used Safelite. I did notice a slight difference in the HUD but I'm already used to it. It did look a little stretched at first but certainly not distorted. And, yes, they did use HUD glass. See attached pics.

I recently had a similar experience but due to a chip/crack in the windshield of my 2011. After replacing the windshield the display was stretched horizontally and not as tall. The display was also on a noticeable angle, sloping down to the left. I searched online and found this helpful forum thread.

The same technician from Gerber Glass who did the install came out to take a look. He made sure the window was seated and positioned correctly. He said it was a Chinese aftermarket windshield. He said he could replace it with another aftermarket brand, Pilkington, but he didn't know if that would fix the problem.

He took pictures of it and recommended an OEM windshield and that I call my insurance agent which I did. Fortunately they agreed to replace it with an OE one at no extra cost to me. I paid $100 deductible upfront on the first one. Once that was done I am back to how it looked originally.

Haha, I just read this yesterday too. Debating whether or not it's worth it to file a claim or just buy a cheapie?

I wonder what causes the Chinese glass to have improper optical quality when it comes to HUD glass? Cheaper laminate films? Faster drying times when molten?

It seems whenever it's a Chinese made replacement part, it doesn't function as good as OEM no matter what kind of part.

I filed a claim on my my former 2011 Camaro with HUD and had no issues with getting an OEM windshield replacement. I only had to pay around 150 for the difference with my insurance company. That was with AllState.
