I have been busy tuning the Audison. I thought I killed a tweeter today, but apparently I just bought a bad Aux cable! :(

I am going to swap the 300/2v2 on the tweeters for a 300/4v3 that I have laying around and reset my gains. I hope that in the future I can go 3 way and fix some of the issues I have been finding in the Audison tune. I think that running crossovers of 80-400sih-8000ish would be much better with how the tune is looking. I have a huge difference of levels at 125hz and 630hz... more than 12db! (125 hz is way to loud and 630 needs tons of help). I noticed that some of the areas where I have to cut my signal (1.25khz for instance) is also cut on the stock head unit EQ. My audison does not ask me to de-eq the head unit.... I am thinking that it never had an eq?

I am not really in love with the focals personally, but I spent a ton of time tuning the Bit and I am pretty happy with where I am now. I can buy the new ES KX3 mids for 500$ and build out my A-pillars, but I probably will not have the cash for a few months...

I am crossing my midbass at 4250 at 12db and crossing the tweeters at 5000 at 12db instead of cutting tons at 4000(Focal crossover is 4700hz -12 or -18db). I tuned my friend's 2010 SS (Hybrid 3 ways, Bit one, a small sub) and he also had tons of stuff at 4000 that needed to be cut and he was crossing his mids (on axis) from 300-6000. I am still extremely new at this, but I am slowly learning. I have a Audiocontrol RTA on the way to see if I can get some better measurements from a calibrated and more professional microphone.

The fun of tuning
I may have missed this somewhere in the post, but you have your tweeters in stock locations right?
Have you considered putting them in the A-pillars?
My SEAS/Dayton combo will be crossed over low (around 2.2K) and I plan to test in both the stock location in the doors as well as A-pillars. The miniDSP is easy to play with for crossover and time delay

My tweeters are in the stock location. We thought about putting them in the pillars but decided it would be better to leave that spot open to move to 3-ways in the future. It was also a lot more work for what we felt was little or no gain.

I think you will be really happy with any speakers you play with. The hard part is really tuning your DSP. I bought an AudioControl RTA to help tune mine ( and I have access to a Bit Tune...I have not tried it yet). Even with all these tools you still need to have a human tune it by ear. A large portion of this is personal preference. It is amazing to me how much you can change the sound by just moving the 630hz EQ up or down.

Are you going to install everything during the winter? I think you are going to really like your 4th order! We just finished my friend's 2010SS with a JL 12W6v3 2:1 4th order with the same external box size as myself (not counting my double baffle) and it sounds great ported through the 6x9 hole with a 4x4 port. His car flexes really hard though and the install is not 100% complete. Two 10s in a 4th is going to be extremely impressive!

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to the 4th order. Had this setup in a 89 T-Bird with two Pioneer 8" subs and people thought I was running 12s. I am planning to use round ports, but having problems finding a hole saw of the right size.
Tuning is definitely an art. I have a good mic and RTA app on my Macbook. I'll look into the AudioControl unit.
I plan to start the install in the late spring. It needs to be warm enough so that the panels don't crack when I work with them. Winters here in Toronto are very very cold

I have not had a problem with the KRX2 power handling. I am running them active and feeding them tons of clean power. I replaced my 300/2v2 on my tweeters with a 300/4v3 so I can go 3 way active at some point. It does not really seem to have much less power. Very odd...

If I turn the sub off the component set alone can do ~115db on the star wars theme! ( according to my RTA ) I think these things are plenty loud!

I am pretty sure that my tweeters in my Audison are at -9db and at that level normal music is still ~109db at the highest (clean -> 22 /40 ) volume of the head unit. I can turn it up about 6db more than that in the DSP....

The box is tuned around 32-33hz and the car peaks at 32hz and a little less at 43hz. My friend's 4th order(ported through 6x9 hole tuned to 52hz or so) seems to also peak at 41hz (larger) and 32hz (smaller).

Loud is always great Tweeters don't need much power to get loud anyway, even 25W is a lot of power for tweeters.

Chris, do you happen to have any pics of your friend's 4th order setup? specifically, I'm interested in how you guys did the venting through the rear deck.

I will try to get some pictures for you. We just have a 4x4 port pointing at the right rear 6x9 hole and have the other covered up. He did some more in depth things to seal it off, but I don't remember what they were off the top of my head. He said it wasn't difficult.
