I can see the ECU pulling timing from time to time... but I don't have enough insight to know why it is pulling timing... the knock sensor PIDs on my dashhawk don't seem to work... all i can monitor is Spark Retard.... seems like it pulls less timing when running higher octane... but I can't be 100% sure why... could be a number for factors...

Dude, no need to be a dick. I like learning random tidbits of information, I figure others might too. If you didn't care for that piece of knowledge kindly just ignore it. Since you already knew that piece of knowledge there is no need to comment on it one way or another.

Hey guys, I've been a quiet lurker on this site for a while now but I actually need to do some questioning myself here on this one so I finally registered lol.
![]() The salesman at the dealership where I bought my car told me to put nothing but premium gas (93 octane here)... I saw the OM said 87 or higher... I read above that running higher octane would cause more carbon buildup which I REALLY don't want. Was that statement true? Would there be any negative effects if I switch down to 87 octane now? My car has roughly 230 miles on it only so far. |

Not sure of the carbon build up... my gut instinct is that it wouldn't be a problem... but I have nothing to back that up...

The grade of gas you put in should not damage it whether it needs higher octane or lower. The computer should detect the higher/lower grade of gasoline and adjust ignition timing to match.
However, I remember some of the V8 guys saying that their car was stuck on the 87 octane ignition tables even though they put only premium in. This is because the dealer put 87 in for the first tank and the car never relearned for the higher octane. My advice is to just stick to what's in the manual, 87 is cheaper and without a tune you probably don't get much in the way of performance from higher grade.

Does the 2SS (426 hp w/6 speed manual) require premium fuel or will regular work fine in it? Has anyone with this engine/tranny combo tried regular? The identifying info next to the earlier posters on this thread all seem to have the V6 and I'm guessing that's what they have been talking about. Thanks for the help! I am expecting to get mine within the next week or so...can't wait!
