L99 VVT Cam Upgrade
Just out of curiosity, has anyone done one of the cam kits from GPI or TSP for VVT Cam with AFM Delete? I am specifically looking at this package, but wasn't sure what all else is needed (besides the AFM delete kit) and how pleased people are with the VVT Cam change. My goal is just aggressive sound and more HP, no plans for a supercharger or turbo down the road.
Here is the package I am looking at, I thank you for any comments. http://shop.gwatneyperformance.com/g...tcamshaft.aspx Last edited by Shinkle01; 12-29-2016 at 08:39 AM. |

GPI is a lot more active supporting the forum. I have talked with both GPI and Texas Speed. Both seem to have done a lot with VVT but I will do my business with GPI. Ryan was great to talk to and they provide the tuning for all they sell where Texas did not really want to talk about tuning unless I took the car in. I am waiting for my ported throttle body to coma in and then I am getting my tune from Gwanity Performance Innovation for my Bolton improvers (CAI, Headers, Exhaust, and ported throttle body) to get me buy till I do my cam install. Texas seems to post some stuff and then disappear. Just my gut feeling I think I will get better support form GPI.

I have the GPI SS1 with their ported heads and afm/dod delete. Great setup... and I'm supercharged with that setup... Ryan is the goto guy for VVT...

I would vote for GPI. I have his SS3 package in my L99 and couldn't be happier. It pulls like a freight train. Also the Cam Motion support is top notch if you have any questions from them. I don't know if your willing to do a Torque Converter but I would go with the SS3 and be done with it. You can also tell Ryan your goals and he can work with you and design a custom setup. His tuning and service is one of the best out there.

Bought this kit this year. Ask him how much the tuner and tuning is as well, this is one thing that is kind of hidden cost from their website. He can hook you up. Buy one from him it makes it so much easier.
Other things to think about is the auxiliary stuff, I bough 16 lifters to do all the lifter (you are there already). Rockers, are another good thing to look at. I bought cryotreated Brian Tooley rockers for making it more robust. If your doing the install yourself make sure to really get the oil pan correctly sealed as mine has had a leak since my cam install. I did the install myself, it is not hard at all. The cam phasor kit is something that I struggled with because I did not read the instructions very carefully. I have the SS1 VVT from GPI and it is a blast. Any higher though you will need a torque converter, that is my one complaint, when coming to a stop my car pushes the torque converter, but the flip side when I stomp on it its power is right there on demand. I also sized this cam on looking to go to supercharger in the future. |

GPI is the way I am going to go when the time comes. I have read nothing but rave reviews about Ryan and his team. Def staying VVT!

I have the GPI VVT SS3, but a local friend did the SS1. Sounded great and made over 440rwhp on a load dyno (I made 463 on the same one with ported heads).
Been DD'ing mine for 1.5 years.

That seems odd John. 20 hp difference WITH ported heads and 2 stages bigger cam?

I installed the GPI SS1 VVT cam two years ago, it's been 12,000 miles with no problems. GPI will sell you the whole kit, everything you need except fluids. I installed it in my garage. I have HP Tuners, Ryan did the remote tune for me. It is my daily driver. It runs great and it sounds mean, I get compliments everywhere I go. Has a nice lope, I replaced the stock exhaust with the Solo axleback so that I could hear the cam. The car is a blast to drive, you won't go wrong with the SS1.

+1 for Ryan and the GPI VVT1. I bought the full kit and did the install in my garage as well. After remote tune I took it to Ryan to get it just right and it made 457rwhp on his dyno. Drive it 50 miles a day round trip and couldn't be happier!

I have a 65k mile car, do you think a VVT SS1 cam would be unreliable in it? It's my daily driver so as much as I love to go fast, reliability is my priority. Would you guys say it would be safe? Thanks
