Exhaust Too Raspy
I just installed a full exhaust system on my 2010 SS L99. I'm running 2" x 3" Kooks Headers, Off-Road Connection Pipes into a 3" Corsa ZL1 catback.
Whenever I give it moderate throttle (just over 2k rpms) I get an extremely raspy sound. To me it sounds cheap and ricey, almost like the mufflers are metal trash cans being beaten on. I'm wondering what would I can do to eliminate this rasp. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well Corsa is known to be raspy. Some people love it, some hate it. I personally think it sounds good. Unfortunately, there isn't going to be much you can do. Your catless mid pipes are another source of rasp. Hi flows tend to help produce a deeper note than catless mid pipes. But even swapping them out, running a corsa catback you're still gonna have a raspy tone. Not much you're going to be able to do unless you switch catbacks

Add a set of flowmaster mufflers. Lesser decibel level overall... gone is any 'raspy'ness, nice deep sound yet not quite waking the dead.
I live in CA in an apt. complex. Its all the perfect balance for me. ![]() |

Too bad because thats a pricey catback...Sounds like you prefer more of a tuned exhaust note like me. You're gonna have to replace those off road pipes with something to reduce the rasp. I would recommend either replacing the pipes with chambered mufflers or at least replacing the x-pipe with a resonated pipe. Adding 16" chambered mufflers would work well I think.

Out of curiosity, what Corsa system do you have?

It's the 3" system made for the ZL1. I wanted quad tips so that's why I went with it. Part number 14971. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I would try hi flo cats first. My lt headers and mbrp 3 in set up is pretty tame under normal driving. High flow cats are probably the main difference and could be a fairly easy fix for you.

I hate the raspy sounding exhausts, I hope you get it sorted out.

Forced induction (twin snails), if you don't want to change the pipes... otherwise, you'll just have to sell the exhaust system (or possibly trade someone for a tamer system... but I guess that's easier said than done where you're from).

Harmonics play a huge part in exhaust sound. Pipes, the size of them and mufflers control the sound. A recent example on my 2016 Miata I installed an axle back from Goodwin Racing. The muffler had a smallish 2.5" tip. I cut it and welded on a dual tip, two 3" outlets. That changed the sound completely- it sounded ricey like a bumble bee. Just that one change changed the sound of the exhaust. I went back to a single tip.
The only suggestion I would offer in your case is to make sure first you have no leaks and if you don't change the mufflers. I have FLowmasters on mine and just love the sound- no rasp, deep and throaty with a little popping on deceleration off the gas. |
