dear everyone,
it's my first post on this forum , I'm a super fan of american muscle car(camaro to be exact) from Beijing. I have 1 set of flowmaster american thunder catback system (with outlaw mufflers) . after 2 months' travelling them finally arrived, after i put them on my car, the sound is marvellous and aggressive, but···· the resonance around 2k rpm is so obnoxious, it really drones a lot, i wonder if the flowmaster resonator can work with my exhaust system to kill the drone, even if i'll have to sacrifice 1/3 sound to get rid of the drone, i'll do it . BTW, my car is a 15 RS 3.6L with D/M mode V6. (the only version GM sells in China) . i'm kinda desperate now, it;s my daily driver, i drive 40km to my workplace on high way everyday... i really love the sound, hate the thought of giving it up... I wish everyone a happy chinese new year ~

happy chinese new year! since parts may be difficult to get since you're in China, why not head to a local exhaust shop? Maybe you can pickup a resonator and have them weld it on?

Magnaflow Resonated X pipe will solve most sound problems, however your going to loose a lot of volume.

i can settle with 12469 (24'' overall), it's shorter, however it has center y-pipe cutaway.. i wonder if the y-pipe works the same as the tru-x pipe. if they are more or less the same i'm gonna place an order and wait for another months maybe. |

Generally on a V8 the x pipe will cackle a bit and a h pipe will be deeper sounding. I have the solo j pipe system on my V8 and it eliminates my drone but I am far form stock and I do not know if it will work with your system. The V6 guys will chime in and give you some guidance soon.
Maybe drop the trans down a gear for now and increase the rpm at cruise to get you out of the 2000 rpm drone zone.

J-pipes do a great job of eliminating drone. I had a custom cat-back installed consisting of a "resonated x-pipe" by Magnaflow (part 11386) and then 2.5" pipe back (removed factory resonators and mufflers) and it droned a fair bit around 1700 - 2200 RPM or so, so I had j-pipes from Solo Performance added and the drone is almost gone, just a little bit around 1700 RPM, and even then it's much quieter. Solo Performance j-pipes are adjustable in length so you can "tune" them to find the right length to remove drone.

I'd try the res x-pipe first, I think that will solve it, J-Pipes would take out the drone for sure, but they may not fit as those mufflers take up quite a bit of space. They might fit, but it would take a lot of fab work, and I'd want them welded.

thank you, i think i'll probably go with the j-pipe solution, i;ll start looking for those tmr. does j-pipe give an extra torque in low rpm or it is solely designed to eliminate the drone ?

From what I've read j-pipes don't affect gas flow or sound (from the tail pipes) at all. The way they work is: a certain frequency range of sound waves causes drone, and the j-pipes are capped at the end which causes the sound waves to bounce back and cancel each other, thereby eliminating them and the drone.
The frequency of the sound waves that cause drone can differ with different exhaust piping, and there is likely a range for a few hundred RPM where the drone occurs, so by having adjustable j-pipes (like from Solo) you can "tune" them to what you need for your particular setup. If you can't get adjustable ones, you'll likely need about 36" long j-pipes for this car. I have my j-pipes as long as possible (about 1/16" from contacting something in either direction) and there is still a bit of drone, but it's reduced by about 90% or so I'd say. |
