By hand. I never thought it was that hard to remove, if you really want one that's a pita you should look at my 2011 Sierra, no chance to get that thing off with out a special tool.

I use a strap wrench, it only fits in a special spot and you have to turn the handle down to the right angle. It only turns a small amount, but it works. Try the old 350's in a Silverado/sierra with an engine oil cooler. It sits right above the front driveline in a 4wd and it makes a mess too. Or another pain is a trailblazer with the inline 6.

I had one of those GM 4X4's. I used to wrap the drive shaft with aluminum foil so it would spill on it and when done un-wrap. it was a mess.

Considering the placement of our V8 filters, I find that cup style with a ratchet work the best. Super easy to use.

Agreed! This is what I'm looking for. I am currently using Napa Gold 7060/Wix 57060.

That's what I use. Awesome for filters that are on way too tight (from the factory), and is easy to use in tight places.

Interesting. It's from snap on was $11 and only works on the black AC Delco UPF48R filter

Great idea with the aluminum foil, I have a Sierra 4X4 with the 8.1 engine and it's always a mess when changing filter, I'll give the foil a try on the next go round.

Foil is a great idea. I also put cardboard down to catch anything that's spills. My filter comes off by hand, grab and twist. A latex glove can help grip if it's oily.
