Chevy SS anybody have one too ?
Anybody here have a SS sedan plus a gen 6 camaro?
Considering swapping out my 2003 M5 for one, which is the benchmark car Chevy was gunning for. Not much out there in the way of V8 manual trans sedans and I only see that drying up further over time. I know the bmw has more refinement and interior quality and is a better drivers car. But the SS is a new car without the need for constant care and feeding which frees up a lot of weekend time to go enjoy my SS convertible ! I figure the payback is within 4-5 years so financially it's a good move. But I'm concerned it's just too similar to the Camaro Ss so I will get bored more easily driving two very similar cars. But we may also swap my wife's sedan for a 2 door vert bmw which leaves my sedan as our only family road trip car. Extra room in the SS would be nice and probably also rides nicer than an M5 considering it has the MRC. |

Those E39s are awesome...and I really can't see how a new Chevy SS is a FINANCIALLY good move. It's certainly a good car but I'm not sure where you are saving or making money. The SS has not done very well in sales and isn't something that I would expect to appreciate in value so I'll need you to explain why it is a good financial move. I'd keep the M5 as it is unlikely to depreciate much more and any maintenance certainly can't be as much as a brand new car. That written, the SS seems to be a great car too and if you get it then congrats!

I currently have a G8 and a Camaro. G8 is going bye bye...
The G8 is the SS just older. Mine has the L76 v8 which is 360 HP.

Like the SS, just think they are priced high for what it is. The G8 GT was $30k brand new, granted the interior wasn't as nice and no MRC (15 and up i believe) but is that worth an extra $10-15k?
If Chevy could have priced the SS new at around $35k with incentives it would be a great deal and sell more but guess that is not what they aimed for. I like that you dont see many of them around but people also dont recognize them for what they are, most think they are a malibu |

I have both and love both. I've brought it on the track and it makes a great track car as well. I think they have a 20% off sale right now (wish I would have got that!) which makes it a no brained IMHO if you are in the market for one. I actually like driving it more than the Camaro sometimes

With the LS3 engine and other options the SS is more comparable to the G8 GXP. In the past Chevy included the SS in the 20% discounts when sales were slow and a new SS could be had here in St. Louis for less than $40K.
The cars are built by Holden in Australia and the high price of the car is partly due to the exchange rate. 2017 is the last year for the SS. Many people have wished for a Chevy version of the CTS to replace the SS but so far GM has not indicated any plans to do so. As a side note Holden also built the Pontiac GTO which was the forerunner to our 5th Gen Camaro. I believe Bumble Bee in the Transformers movie was fabricated on the GTO chassis as the Camaro was not in production in time for the filming of the movie. The exchange rate has helped kill car manufacturing in Australia. I think Holden might be the last car manufacturer left in Australia and they will stop manufacturing cars this year. Too bad as the G8 and SS were both awesome cars! |

Personally I wouldn't buy an SS (unless it was being offered for 10-15k off). IMO the Charger Scat Packs are much better 4 door V8 aside from handling, but again that's me.

people are paying a pretty penny for those m5's. v8 manual sedans that are driver's cars are pretty much dead. Value is already high on the m5's and i see it going up over the years. I can't imagine what the cost is to keep it maintained. But i would give it some thought. Lots of people are looking for those m5's and for good reason. Not many people are hunting for chevy ss's. Cause like you said, its like a 4 door camaro. But the m5 will go down in history.

I have one, I bought my wife one last week when they were 20% off. I would not have paid $50K for it, but at $39,800 it was much more comparable to a very nicely equipped Honda Accord pricewise or something similar.
edited to add: oddly enough, it is red hot, much like my convertible and she appreciates the huge bump in power from her Accord!

Source? Last I heard their new sedan was an Opel/Vauxhall rebadge.

Ok here is why it's financially good in my case.
Cost to upgrade after selling my M5 is $20K I am just about to drop $5K on the M5 to refresh suspension, refinish wheels and upgrade the stereo So that puts net upgrade at $15K Not sure how familiar folks are with the long term maintenance costs for a car like this but I can tell you that $15K will be spent in 4-5 years if all goes well. So at that point youbpaid for the SS and guaranteed it will be worth more than a 140K mile 20 year old M5. |

I test drove an SS auto when testing out camaros last year. I remember the seats were too firm, power was decent (seemed a lot better than my wifes L99 SS) and sounded it really good. I clearly liked the 16' Camaro SS more. I bet the SS manual is pretty fun!

I very nearly bought an SS in the fall right after they came off stop sale due to the seat belt fiasco. I ended up getting a 2SS camaro instead. To be honest with you, I suspect that the build quality and reliability of the SS is probably better than the Camaro. It has been around for longer, older platform, etc. I don't recall there being massive threads of people complaining about the diffs, paint quality, etc. As an overall package, it is also a more utilitarian car than the Camaro by a mile. In some ways, I question whether I should have gone that route instead of the Camaro but there are certainly pros and cons to each option.
Personally, I would at least go test drive one. I think it is a very compelling option for replacing the M5 considering the maintenance cost of those at this time. I currently own an e36 M3, which I plan to sell in the spring, and I am very much aware of the steep upcharge in maintenance for the M5 vs. the much more pedestrian service needs of that generation m3. One thing that I will suggest to you is to carefully consider the manual. The automatic is not nearly as good as the 8 speed in the camaro and I am pretty sure that it doesnt have cylinder deactivation so there is no fuel economy savings to be had with the auto in the SS. I drove a manual and liked it quite a bit. Part of the reason why I ultimately chose the camaro was because I was going to take some heat from my wife about have 3 manual trans cars that she could not drive since I didnt really want the SS if it had to be an auto. The camaro was a decent compromise since the auto is reasonably good as far as autos go. Of course, she hasnt driven the car once since she is scared to death of it, I think, lol, but that is another story. At least she can drive it if she absolutely has to. There were other factors as well... the audio system is much better in the camaro, for instance, whereas the SS is starting to get a little long in the tooth now. Performance is certainly better as well although the SS is no slouch. |
