Thoughts on the Pirelli P Zero, not the stock ones!!

Has anyone thought of using or tried the P Zero's that are used for Porsche, Ferrari, etc for track use? Just wondering and if so feedback is welcomed. Found someone with the Porsche branded P Zero's willing to sell cheap as new take off's. Owners went with all season Michelins. I know the compound is different than what comes on the factory RS package wheels.

I'd be interested to hear about this also. I just picked up a set of OEM Z/28 wheels that have the Porsche spec N2 PZeros on them. I've been tracking with the RE-71Rs on my stock 1LE wheels and they've been great. Trying to decide if I should try the PZeros on the track or sell them and get some NT01s.

If they're brand new/never driven on, they're used tires. So why not at least try them for a session or two the next time out and run your current RE-71R's in the other sessions and get a direct comparison with what you do know?

That's a great way to figure out if they are worth it or not. If Porsche recommends the tires, they can't be that bad. Right? Then again, unless we try we won't know.

They'd have to be of at least a certain level of "good". Chances are that the differences are more along the line of subjectives than about objectively measured performances, though.

I just ran the PZeros I got on the Z/28 rims at Thunderhill today on their 3 mile course. The verdict on the PZeros is that they are a terrible track tire for anyone except a beginner HPDE drive on their first several outings.

The car felt squirrley and not sticking to the track. As I drove them, they start feeling greasy and just did not feel the grip I got with my RE-71Rs. I do realize that they are 2 very different tires but apparently I got spoiled with the RE-71Rs.

jksynergy: Don't waste your money for those PZeros if you want to track.

Or don't waste your money on an HPDE instructor.
The asshole should have to know what you work with and not tell you that you need better tires. Brakes, bigger sways, panhard rod, better aero... yada, yada.

Dickhead should know and have you braking earlier, conserving what you have, and getting the best out of it. Even if you do finish last you could have at least learned something. And had some fun.

Took all the fun out of it for you.

CamaroFred. To clarify, I'm not in a beginner group for HPDE. I'm an intermediate that was pushing my car which is why I gave the comments about the PZeros. I normally run a Bridgestone RE-71R for track events and have no problems with that tire on the track.

P zeros are like MPSS tires. Street breed. Hard track use they will give you the finger after a few laps. Used to like them a lot but no more. Glad to hear the Re71r performs better.

Thanks. Honest feedback is what I wanted. I'll look elsewhere when I run out of the stock Goodyears. Still have 3 sets to burn through.
