If something has changed, I'm changing my plate to TAG UR IT. Last I heard, it was only 6 digits/letters. I've never seen one w/ 7, but wouldn't doubt it will go up to 7 soon (if it already hasn't).

See...that's what I thought too. But, I was down at our police vehicle shop today and what do I see??? According to the Local Tax Assesors Office..THE NEW SEVEN DIGIT PLATE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE WHEN THE NEWLY DESIGNED PLATES COME OUT AT THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.. I cant seem to find the state webpage i found that info on..to confirm what the office said..But that is what i was told hope this helps, and settles your nerves until the first of the year..Then it will be a race to your local office to get the plate you want.

Texans will have a week — beginning Monday at noon — to go to www.txdot.gov and vote for one of the four new designs or for the existing plate. If Texans pick the current design, it will be modified to show seven, rather than six digits.



Why change the plate at all? Well, it's a matter of math.

The current design was introduced in 2000. Since then, TxDOT has manufactured about 31.5 million sets of the plate.

Davio said TxDOT is about to run out of possible number and letter combinations using the six-digit sequencing system.

The new plate will sport an additional, seventh digit.

"We're just running out of those patterns, and the patterns need to be unique," Davio said.
