Tow trucks do it all the time. Here in winterland, crawling though a snowstorm, lights on, defroster on high, can easily suck the life out of a battery.

I didn't know the jumper cables would work with the negative disconnected. Nice to know!

Every car has tons of ground circuits all connected to, wait for it, The body. The jumper lug under the hood is connected to the main battery cable that runs to all of the positive circuits in the car/fuse boxes etc. Each polarity is all interconnected with every system. that circuit only breaks when a switch, relay, etc prevents its path. So, even with absolutely no battery, once connected to the jumper lugs, or even the positive lug and any metal part of the car, the circuits will all function. With jumper cables large enough to carry the amperage, the car would start and run off them with no battery in the car.

Samething happened to me. disconnected battery and accidently closed the lid. My subs are in the way to reach around to pull on the trunk release. Had to pull the battery out of my other car and use jumper cables to pop the trunk open.
