Cold air Airaid Camaro 3.6L V6 250-242
HI,
Did anyone install a Airaid 250-242 on their V6 camaro? Do you even notice the 12HP and improved torque? Or is to subtle to even notice? Should I save the $329? thanks! J |

Airaid posted a thread looking for a local volunteer to have their CAI installed on a 3.6 6M. I responded and they put it on my LS after work today. 45 minutes later, after taking one of their guys for a quick trip around the block, I was the proud owner of a (free) new Airaid CAI. I have not had a chance to open it up yet, with or without the CAI. I have been trying to follow the manufacture recomended break in and I only have 950 miles on the cr so far, only 550 more to go before I know what she really feels like.

No... its the classic "baby it" break-in vs "hard" break-in debate.
Personally, I suggest throwing a break-in specific oil in it (like RP's break-in oil, or another like it) and then drive it like you normally would. But thats just my personal preference. However, I would suggest no top-speed runs or 1/4 miles until its broken in. However, lead footing it on the street shouldn't be an issue. - X

Yes I do understand that BUT if you are going to be that CAUTIOUS then why would you put a aftermarket air intake system on your car ?
There are many ways to break in a car. Another example;............... What's The Best Way To Break-In A New Engine ?? The Short Answer: Run it Hard ! Why ?? Nowadays, the piston ring seal is really what the break in process is all about. Contrary to popular belief, piston rings don't seal the combustion pressure by spring tension. Ring tension is necessary only to "scrape" the oil to prevent it from entering the combustion chamber. If you think about it, the ring exerts maybe 5-10 lbs of spring tension against the cylinder wall ... How can such a small amount of spring tension seal against thousands of PSI (Pounds Per Square Inch) of combustion pressure ?? Of course it can't. How Do Rings Seal Against Tremendous Combustion Pressure ?? From the actual gas pressure itself !! It passes over the top of the ring, and gets behind it to force it outward against the cylinder wall. The problem is that new rings are far from perfect and they must be worn in quite a bit in order to completely seal all the way around the bore. If the gas pressure is strong enough during the engine's first miles of operation (open that throttle !!!), then the entire ring will wear into the cylinder surface, to seal the combustion pressure as well as possible. The Problem With "Easy Break In" ... The honed crosshatch pattern in the cylinder bore acts like a file to allow the rings to wear. The rings quickly wear down the "peaks" of this roughness, regardless of how hard the engine is run. There's a very small window of opportunity to get the rings to seal really well ... the first 20 miles !! If the rings aren't forced against the walls soon enough, they'll use up the roughness before they fully seat. Once that happens there is no solution but to re hone the cylinders, install new rings and start over again. Etc. Etc.

OK, so nevermind the engine break in debate. Lets not go totally off topic here.
In my mind, the real question concerning the new CAI hasn't been addressed yet. How do we know what kind of gains will be seen from the Airaid if its been installed on a car that sounds like it has not yet been ran hard or dynoed? If I was the maker, wouldn't I want to install this on a fully broke in car that I can do some proper testing on, instead of just going around the block? az2009se, I think its great that you got a new CAI out of the deal, Heck Im jealous! But how are you going to know if your getting anything out of it when you don't truely know what the car can do with the stock intake? Someone enlighten me! lol

I don't think anyone got the Airaid Yet..............If anyone gets it & installs it before me, please post your results............. Like I said before: My Airaid is payed for, I am just waiting to get it. As soon as I get it I will post my take on it Plus the 0-60mph & hp results. The runs will be done on the same day with Orig. intake & then the Airaid..... The temperature, humidity, elevation, place & method of the runs will all be the Same!
