Serious Input Required

I currently own an '11 SS Convertible (see my sig), paid off, 13,000 miles.

Two weeks ago, I went and test drove a '17 ZL1, red, 6 speed, exposed CF hood, 3,000 miles...and here's the kicker, it's a GM buy-back. The fuel pump was faulty, the owner bitched, GM bought it back and replaced the pump and gas tank. Everything is now in working order and covered under GM warranty.

I really liked the car; however, I'm 36 and have no payments besides my mortgage. I love having everything paid off!

I know I'm going to get 1,000,000 different answers, but what are your thoughts? I have them talked down to $32,000 OTD (ZL1's price minus my trade-in value). I can pick it up Friday if I decide to do it.

Much appreciated.

I was in the same boat.

Life's short. If you can do it comfortably/responsibly, do it!

Seems like a pretty crazy deal to me. If its a buyback what's the deal with the title? Will insurance have any pushback towards it?

If all checks out and you don't buy it, PM me the dealer info and I will buy it.

i would say yes do it .. but depends on how your budget is .. put few thousand down .. take loan out for 25k or something and that's a civic payment ..

if everything is under warranty i wouldn't worry much about the buyback ..

What are they giving you for your car - impossible to tell if the deal is good unless you tell us what they're taking of the zl1. I'd ask if they can extend your warranty a bit if the price on the car isnt great.

So they are giving you $25,000 for your 2011 convertible? If so, that is a pretty good deal if the numbers I am getting on KBB are correct for your car. KBB says your car should be worth about $20k assuming you have 35000 miles.

Its all in what you can afford, with that said sounds like a fare deal.

Good deal. Car has a warranty.

Life is VERY short. Leave as little on the table as possible, while not hurting others, and treat yourself to something nice.

Buy it.

Certified or Not?

If the vehicle is considered a CPO; certified pre-owned with warranty then you are covered beyond the original warranty which is a pretty good deal or item to have. As far as price, I would ask for more for your car and see if you can get them to lower the price on the ZL1, play the "well you know it is a buy back, used and the dealer did get money from GM if a true buy back". I think there is more money to be had and I would work it further. I think they are asking on the high side for the vehicle. Work some more out of them.

I think I would be asking for a little better deal as it is a bought back car that will have a history with service.

Keep in mind that these cars get really bad gas mileage in case that has not occurred to you.
I was astounded at how bad the gas mileage is in my Zl1. I get 13mpg at best on a good day with my foot just resting on the pedal. It just does down from there as the boosts goes up. My car varies from 3mpg to 20 when coasting but 13 is my average per tank.
Make sure you have the cash flow for the gas station.

I'm 47 & have been driving 10 & 15 year old paid off cars...I promised myself I would not buy my toy till I was completely out of debt. & I was in your shoes not long ago.

Me, I would put that $32k payment towards the principal of your mortgage or money market account & stay on your current track...most your age don't have the discipline. It's a great feeling paying off your mortgage & much more rewarding than driving home a Camaro.

I know I'm in the minority...

I somewhat agree with this. I'm 33 and have a 2017 ZL1. I can't turn back now and love cars. But I do make good money and 5 years ago had a paid off 2003 Cobra. I started buying new cars and had several that held good equity. I've had 6 cars since 2011(08 Z06, 13 GT500, 14 C7 Z51, 16 428i, 16 Hellcat Challenger, 2017 ZL1). I pay extra every month on my mortgage and it should be done in my 40's. But I often ask myself, "what if I'd just been a little more disciplined"? I'm not willing to give up the cars now, but if I'd never gone down this path, I wouldn't know what I was missing anyways. Life if full of "what if" though. I personally choose to responsibly enjoy my money now, instead of being 60+ and finally getting my first toys. If you indeed make good money, and can afford the car while still investing and chipping away at your mortgage, I say "why not"? We never know how life will go.
