X-pipe vs H-pipe vs True Dual
Hi all
I'm installing dynatech LTH on my 2012 SS, they only offer intermediate pipes (catted or straight, a couple of sizes available), these are supposed to connect directly to the remaining exhaust system In terms of flow and power, is it a much better decision to go fabricate an X-pipe or H-pipe instead, or even go with a true dual exhaust system if this is an option? And will these options make the sound much louder; I really don't want any noise, but I'm not sure though how much power this semi-sleeper will cost me Thanks in advance |

You want some form of cross-over, whether it be an H or an X. Power wise you find a very in-significant difference between the two. The noise, however, is very different. The factory H pipe produces (to me) a very pleasant "lublublub" typical to a muscle/American v8. It has that nice pulse typically associated with an "old-school" sound. When you're hard in the gas and the revs are up it has a nice growl to it.
The X pipe pretty much completely loses that "lublublub" pulse that you get with an H pipe, it sounds much smoother, a little more exotic, definitely less "muscle car". And when you stand in the gas they really wail, it's a bit more violent, almost shredding sounding scream. I actually prefer the H-pipe sound myself - alas the previous owner spend all sorts of money on this nice American Racing X-Pipe, and I can't bring myself to remove it. It's a trade-off really, driving around easy the H-pipe shines for beautiful noise, however it's hard to beat the scream of the X-pipe at full song.

![]() And I agree with you. I prefer the sound of the H-pipe over the X for the reasons you've stated. But unfortunately most of the good after market catbacks utilize the X pipe instead. Just one of those trade off's I guess

My x-pipe definitely brought about a higher-pitched scream at WOT, rather than a low growl. But being paired with a Borla ATAK system, still has a nice low-pitched rumble at low speeds/rpms. |

Your car comes with a stock H pipe in if you have the l99 your resonator....what is unaffectionately know as the "suitcase", if your a manual you have a simple H pipe. No need to switch to another pipe, unless you want to get louder or less annoying with a automatic rattle from what ever....the resonator quiets it some with noise from AFM/DOD.... Just a couple facts, I used to own a l99 2ss vert 2011... And you would be better with high flow cats a little for the rasp and exhaust stench of gasoline...let alone being legal here in the states.
