Transmission problem?
Hi guys - I've been noticing an odd noise and can't find any prior threads on the issue. I have a 2011 SS M6 with 46k miles. I've noticed that at low speeds (between 5-10mph) while in first gear making a turn, there is a rubbing noise. This only happens when I maintain that speed (i.e. driving around a culdesac). It's especially apparent if the car rocks back and forth a bit while in gear. Sounds like it's coming from the rear end. Anyone have any ideas before I bring it to the dealer?

May be something as simple as needing a differential service done. At your mileage you are due if it hasn't been done yet.

I did just have the rear diff fluids changed last week. Could this be it?

1st has gears that are more straight cut than the other gears so there is more play.
Start in 2nd or shift to 2nd as soon as you start rolling if you don't need the acceleration 1st provides.

Go to a parking lot and make figure 8s. That will distribute the fluid to the clutch packs. The mechanic should have done this when the fluid was changed.

Yes, go find a parking lot and do a dozen figure 8's, sounds like it needs to be broke in again. Modern oil has the the LSD additive in it, so that shouldn't be the issue. If it keeps it up, check with dealer or where ever you had the work done at about the additive.

Doing figure 8's is part of the service to ensure the fluid gets out further...... |

So after waiting a bit and driving it again, the noise came back. Going to have the dealer check on the additives.

I have an appointment on Monday. Is it harmful to drive it for the weekend?

I would avoid a long trip for sure, but a few miles here and there shouldn't be a problem. I'm thinking a rear hub/bearing or maybe even a caliper hanging up. Is it a metallic sound?

It's not metallic, more of a rubbing sound. I checked my invoice and it looks like the dealer didn't add the Limited Slip Additive. However, the diff fluid change was done about 4 weeks ago, I hope there's no damage.

Depends which diff oil the dealer used.
Here's the history: Diff fluid for 2010 Camaro V8: 75W-90 GM p/n 89021677 Friction Modifier GM p/n 1052358 Superseded by: 75W-90 GM p/n 88900401 Friction Modifier GM p/n 88900330 2017 Superseded by: GM p/n88862624 No friction modifier required Hopefully, the fluid part numbers are on your work order! |

The invoice shows the 88900401, but that's it. Should there be an additive?
