my FIX for exhaust opening on ground effects
So the one thing that I wasn't happy with was the way the round exhaust tip looked in the square opening on my ground effects. I could not find any square tips that fit the opening and also looked good. So what I decided to do was make a cover to hide the exhaust pipe. I am happy with the way it turned out. What do you guys/gals think?
I went to a hobby shop and got some weldable steel that was basically perforated with small holes. I cut the pattern of the opening along with two tabs which I screwed to the inner part of the opening so it is not visable. I then painted them black. Just FYI.. the picture of the left one appears like it messed up but that is just some water on the screen.(just gave her a bath) Last edited by brooks35; 09-30-2009 at 05:49 PM. |

Looks good, do you think grime might build up in there over time though?

It definitely hides it but what about long term concerns... rusting out from the corrosive exhaust and moisture? While it has holes it does look like it would create some restrictions... block air flow? Looks nice but I think the blacked out tips would be less problematic... IMHO

It doesn't appear to be restrictive at all. I have had the muffler delete done so maybe that helps. I coated both sides with high heat paint so I don't think corrosion should be a concern. There is also a space between the screen and exhaust tip so I just hit them with a hose as I am washing the car, and nothing has stuck to them yet. I also blacked out the tips before doing this and they still looked bad IMO.

Some treehugger will make a universal set and sell them as exhaust filters and make millions of dollars lol

Off topic, I know but how much extra did it cost you to have your GFX painted by the dealer?

Brooks I think it looks awesome! That round pipe square hole thing has been my biggest turn off for the ground effects for me. I actually canceled the option after seeing it. Had GM done this from the beginning I would have most definitely stayed with them. Great job!

Thanks DOC that was an eyesore for me also.
myfirst camaro...my dealer first quoted me $636.00 +tax. I told them I would have them done at another shop and they then quoted me $450. So I had them do it. |

Cool idea. But I would probably go with a larger mesh, or maybe a flat-black grille type cover for the GFX exhaust opening.

Great job! I hated the round peg in the square hole look too. Very slick.

I had to stay with a metal insert because it does get real hot from the exhaust exiting. I tried a larger mesh but the pipe was still visable,so it sort of defeated the purpose.
