1:24.6 Summit Main chasing a 6th Gen 1LE on Hoosiers

Had a ball chasing this 1LE for a few laps. He was on 295 Hoosiers and it seemed he was about a second faster then me - very impressive car. For 90 minutes of track time I only got 4 or 5 true hot lap attempts and never really strung together a lap the way I wanted. 295 R888Rs were pretty darn good though - I was running 28 up front, 25.5 cold rear and it kept the car nicely in line. Temps were 50 - 65 degrees - tires never got greasy or seemed to fall off.

Key thoughts:
  • Could be meaner on the brakes into 1 but this was my last session on these pads so I was being a little nice to them
  • Much happier with my line through 1 and 2 - was able to pin 3rd to the floor throughout the entire turn
  • Still braking early for 3 but increased exit speed almost 10mph - carrying much more in and on throttle earlier
  • Still need to carry more speed through 4 down the hill - I'm leaving 8 - 10 mph at the apex... scary turn though
  • My exit from 6 is costing me 1 - 2 seconds - had a few folks following me and they said (and I could see it in my rear view mirror how they gained) that I really need to focus on straightening out the exit from 6 to the entry of 9.
  • Finally hit 140 on the straight away - was one of my goals for the season and got there yesterday - other goal was to break a 1:25 - mission accomplished!

Overall, pretty happy. With a few more hot laps and new brake pads I think I could get to 1:23 maybe even 1:22. I think the car is a 1:21 car so starting to push'er hard. Love this thing!

If you had Hoosiers too you’d be spanking that 1LE

Thanks for sharing your video. It was too short though! Really high def video and it looked great.

Turn 6 is a bear on that track. It kicks my butt every time.

What system were you using to log the lap and time and the video?

You had a great run! Was it just the view from the camera or was the 1LE pulling away a bit on the straights? I wonder if he was fully stock other than the Hoosiers?

Re data: it's a GoPro 5 and I imported the video onto my phone and synced with Harry's laptimer grand prix - pretty easy to do. However, I don't know if its my phone or GPS but I'm not getting reliable 5HZ GPS updates and instead this video was shot at 1HZ (not nearly accurate enough for any real data analysis) - I'm going to get a VBOX sport and either log w/ Race Logic's program or try again with Harry's but VBOX is 20HZ and calculates Gs based on speed and acceleration as opposed to the iphone's accelerometer which is noticeably affected up and down hills.

Alos, GoPro 5's internal GPS doesn't work for anything - I've played with it both skydiving and racing and I'm not getting reliable readings in either sport. May work ok in open wheel or when mounted outside of the car though.

Re 1LE: it seemed to be a modified car (roll cage, belts, racing seats, wheels and hoosiers) but don't know about power or suspension upgrades. I was with him for two laps and I didn't loose much more then a second... however on my second lap chasing him I missed my heel / toe by what seemed to be only 1K and almost lost the car at 85MPH. I also got caught in traffic so I just relaxed and let him go.

In my video the first two "reference sectors" are actually my second lap chasing him so it doesn't look like he was running away all that much. That said... his exit speed was probably the reason for the pull onto the straight before 3 and while watching my video I noticed I was turning into 1 too soon thus apexing early and not carrying as much exit speed as I could because I got on throttle noticeably later hurting me there too.

It doesn't look nearly as exciting as it felt but here's the missed downshift... first time I ever did it. I'm good with sliding all day long but when the rear just snaps and you're not expecting it then it wakes ya up!

Nice save! Props to you (and the Z). At 85 mph that would def be an "oh shit" moment.

What gear were you downshifting from and what gear did you shift into and which PTM mode?

Thanks. 4 to 3; everything was off so no PTM - it broke free right away - i should have had my shift done before I started turning in.

Yes, props for not losing the car. Everyone says "i know I know" about jamming the brakes but it takes skill to be clear headed in the moment and NOT do it. Good job on that!

That was a nice save indeed and you dealt with that nasty surprise very well. Good job!

Stephen! Welcome (back) to Gen5 land. How do you explain your (nearly) identical times in the 17 ZL1 and the Z/28? Either lap beats the heck out of me, but noticing those times are so close, I thought I'd ask.
