Not where the breaks are used... he means the whole rotor it self that goes rusty over time... not the part where the pads meet the rotor.

the area where the brake pads hit is already shiny.either remove the rotors from the car, prime and paint with hi temp paint(masking the shiny area or i saw some black coated rotors advertised in hot rod magazine last month.claimed they could be ordered thru autozone)just looked in the mag, company is named EBC(www.ebcbrakes.com) and shows 4 different rotor styles all black thermocoated to resist rust.

That dust is actually bits and pieces of your rotor and disc pads. Unfortunately, or really more fortunately, it's ties in directly to stopping the vehicle in motion. There are many pad compounds available but generally speaking, I think you'll find the dirtier ones are more associated with better braking power. That comes in handy when you least expect it!

x2 on paint or buy a new rotor with a coating to prevent this.

I've been looking into the Geomet rotors from R1

Is it possible to paint without having to remove the rotors? Mainly just looking to paint the ‘hat’ of the rotors. The part the rim touches.. I think they’re called hats? Lol

Yes you can just tape it all off, but it is soooo much easier (and you can get the back) if you just pop them off.

Plus you want to sand first, and doing that without them on the car is also nicer.

Seriously save yourself a lot of money and just go to 99 cent store and get pure white vinegar soak them it will completely eat all the rust off completely..then paint the center of the rotors

Did you buy it used? Maybe it was a flood car? Mine still have the factory gray paint on them.

you can use aluminum foil to mask everything off pretty easily, and its quicker than taping.just dont let your wife catch you using her aluminum foil and leaving it lying on the garage floor.

Its bare steel not a flood car. GM didn't coat rotors until a few years into production after a slew of complaints.

Take the wheel off, 2 bolts to remove caliper, one star bolt that holds the rotor on, and then wire brush and paint the hat and perimeter. Just mask the wear surface. You don't want paint sliming up your pads.
