Got the engine torn down to the front cover.....going to need a bigger breaker bar to get the bolt out of the balancer.

Back to work tomorrow....so the mystery will have to linger until at least Monday.

I did turn the engine over via the crank and the cam seems to be moving along with the crank....of course that means nothing, because under load if the dowel sheared off the timing is out of whack.

The plot thickens....

Mike, I'll have that check in the mail tomorrow so you can put it towards your new engine.
Anxious to see the rest. Keep your head up!

I am not sure why, but I was looking at the carnage pics and saying "ooooohhhh" like the alien shirts you guys had on at dinner....

Hope it goes back together soon! ... I'd bet a dose of JB Weld will get it patched up OK

This is a painful thing to read about. I am so sorry this happened to your car, Mike.. It is going to be fun though to watch the rebuild. It will soon be better and badder than ever. I still smell a 427 in the future...

There was mention that the oil pump might have failed. Is that still a possible culprit? I just had cam installed last month and really didn't know about the potential issues with the oil pump. I'd be interested to know if it was involved here. I guess I should have replaced mine. (Live and learn.)

Also, was this motor forged? I'm curious to know what the rwhp was. I keep hearing that it's not necessary to forge an engine until it's up over 600+ rwhp. I thought this car was in the "safe" limits for a stock bottom end.

KYPU, Mike! I'll be following this story.

Probably a 1 bolt cam, and the pin is sheared off. After you take the front cover off, you'll probably be giving Comp Cams an earfull.
i would agree here,,, i just saw a new gm engine that only made it 34 miles and the pin wore a groove in the sprocket and made the cam timing so far off that the engine would not run,, and this was all stock

Our timing sets are very stout (the three bolt ones), no need for an after market unless you want to have adjustability.

but he had a single bolt cam,, pins are known for shearing off,, id only go with a 3 bolt cam

Hopefully this was not another engine destruction caused by the Oil Pump failure.

I wish I could swing a 427...at the moment it's just not possible. May end up with a LS3 crate motor....we'll see.

At one point the pump was suspect....but after looking long and hard at this carnage, it points more to the mechanical timing of the engine being out of whack. With the HP level you're at I'm stunned IPS didn't make you upgrade the pump!

100% stock internals on the engine.....470 rwhp. This set up was wayyyyy safe.

I have a strong feeling this pin is the problem.....we'll see.

Wish I would have the first time.....bad call on my part.

I don't think it's the pump...plenty of oil on the wrist pins and lifters up top to be oil starved.

PQ, no worries man....all I can do at this point is laugh about it.

I think I may have you beat on bad luck buddy....output shaft one week, engine the next.

Top that!
