Don't also forget, it is not just what on star may or may not do with the info, but that it is being stored. That what is stored can be stolen. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the world. Just think about all the recent news events about stolen/compromised data... those wiki-leaks guys managed to steal top secret stuff from US government and DOD systems.
I'm not saying that for the average Joe that anyone would give a damn about where you are going or were you have been, but if they wanted to, they most certainly can find out. I wouldn't also be too surprised if the data was used to give to insurance companies and police. Don't forget, part of the on star account setup IS inputing your insurance company and policy number! How easy is it then to solicit your company to give them incriminating evidence for part of the proceeds? There is red light cameras that send you tickets for "running" lights. Why wouldn't your car be able to tattle on you for speeding/etc.?on star could get some of the citation proceeds just like the red light camera companies do.same with warrenty claims, they already know who your dealer is. All they would have to do is add some small print to their privacy policy and it would be perfectly legal. How many of you actually read all of it? Don't forget also about you vehicles security. On star can unlock you car, and even start some of them. I read an article just last week about hqckers that were able to remotely access those features easily. If you can do it, what keeps other from being able to do it? I am not saying any of this is happening, or will, but now, it is easily possible. I do work in the cyber/data security field, I know that anything that is stored can be stolen. |

I'm sorry guys - some of us are working ourselves up into a frenzy over nothing and taking this conversation in circles.

again... no no no no noYes they can do it. We know that. OnStar is a service that has an aim of doing 1 thing, and its not helping you unlock your car. its MAKING MONEY. They start doing stuff like this guess what, they make NONE, people drop the service, they disconnect their cars, and thats that. They can't just add a line to their privacy policy and make it legal to tattle on you, not only that you don't HAVE TO give them your insurance info either, its not a requirement of the service. All you've posted here is fear mongering. Is it theoretically possible? Absolutely. Will it happen? Absolutely not. PS regarding red light cameras, they are being repealed all over the country. I believe LA County even REMOVED all of their cameras.

So let's say that hypothetically, some hacker in Russia did break into the OnStar servers and steal all the customer data. What would they do with it? Ivan could care less what strip club you patronize. Most likely they would use credit card data if that was available. What else? Honk your horn? Unlock your doors? Check your tire pressures? If that's what your worried about than you really should just cancel your OnStar service. |

You'd be shocked
"How do you know? Do you work for Onstar?"
No but my friend worked for them from 95 to last year. I don't know if I'm agreeing or disagreeing with anyone because this thread is all over the place but I will tell you that you all would be surprised at what goes on... REALLY surprised. Go to 400 Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI 48265 if you don't believe me... "It is theoretically possible for OnStar to be remotely activated by malicious third parties or under government order. This would enable third parties to track the location of the car, along with the ability to listen to the contents of any conversations carried on by the occupants within the car without their consent. However the FBI has been denied the ability to use this as it disables OnStar's safety features as determined by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In its document of privacy practices, OnStar states that it is not possible for them to listen to or monitor conversations in your car without you knowing it. The hardware is designed so that when an advisor calls into your car, a light flashes, a ring tone is heard, and the radio will mute. In 2011 OnStar did announce that it would start retaining all the information collected by the GPS and internal system, so that it could be sold to 3rd parties.Although this data is supposed to be “anonymized”, it remains unclear exactly what they mean by this as it is extremely difficult to anonymize GPS data" ![]() That's all I'm sayin |
