First things first, he needs to learn how to drive properly. Go to a driving school and buy about ten lessons. Next, take him to a racing or security and tactical driving school, I'm not saying that he needs to learn how to race or how to imitate a cop when he is behind the wheel, but such schools offer lessons that teach people what to do when they lose control of the car. After that, have him finish high school first and get him a car, not a 2010 camaro, something cheaper. Such as a 3rd gen. Once he goes to college and finishes his sophmore year with good grades whatever he has made match it by 50%. So, he makes 10 grand, you match 5. That will be a good way to start him off and put money down. For the first few months before he can handle paying the monthly payments by himself, keep matching 50% of what he puts down. He will learn how to be a good driver and learn how to be responsible.

Get him involved in the SCCA. It will give him an outlet for speed in a safe outlet and he will learn the finer points of vehicle control. If you get into there autocross program it is relatively cheap. I believe membership is about $40 a year and you pay about $15 an event. If you don't want to join, you can still participate in the events, you just pay more per event and you don't get any trophies.

Here's the main site, from there you should be able to locate your local division.

I can't believe all the polarizing answers we get about this question. I understand the answers from the young kids who are answering yes, get him the car, but as most of us, I assume, are parents, how can you even think that this is a good idea? It's not about the money to buy love, it's about teaching the value of a dollar and not giving entitlements to your kids. The young man who answered that school is a job has never had a career "job" yet. Kid, wake up and think about your answer in about 15 years when you rely on your paycheck to pay for your family's house, clothes, food, education and on and .... . Thinking that school is a job is assenine. It is your opportunity to better yourself and open up career choices that are fullfilling.

And these kids who feel that it is an invasion of privacy to install some tracking device in their parents car to see where they are and how fast they are driving, have some real growing up to do. If you don't like the rules, why don't you save up some money from your job and buy your own car, when your 18 and your parents are not held ACCOUNTABLE for you and your immature actions! Thats right kids, your Mom and Dad could lose everything they have worked so hard for because of your actions. As one parent said it is not a democracy raising a family, it is a dictatorship!

I saw a video of a factory stock v6 run from 0 to 146 mph.

Your concerns are valid for a first time car owner.

I told my sixth-grader (oldest son) that he can have my fifth gen when he graduates college. He thinks that is a cool plan. He only has 10 years to wait (assuming no time off and he sticks to the 4-year plan).

A bit OT:

If he gets good grades in school (3.7GPA+) and the local university has an accelerated baccalaureate program, he can actually complete a four year degree in three years.

Otherwise, a four year plan requires at minimum 16 credits per term to complete. Not 12, which is full time, 12 credits will take 5 years.

I read an article in Motor Trend today about the 2011 Mustang. It said that their "My Key" feature has the ability to set the governor to any speed you want. I have suggested in the disciples thread to include this feature in our next model year.

But then....we went on the test drive and the power and magnitude of speed/acceleration scared the daylights out of me. I cannot put him behind the wheel of such a forceful machine. He has no idea about horsepower and I'm certain lacks a healthy respect for such. Does anyone know about speed limiters available. Do they even exist? Is that even a possible solution to this dilemma. I've been told about Superchips, Predator, or Diablo to look into to determine if we can put a cap on the speeds, or in any way limited the acceleration and speed potential of the car..... I'm really out of my element here. Any words of wisdom would be very much appreciated.

The car has a computer. I'm sure it can be programmed to only go 55 MPH and only rev up to 4000 RPMs at the dealer. Maybe even lock the traction control in the on position. If you do these things maybe your son will live to be 17. Get a gps sytem in the car to track him, including his speeds.

I would put the money in the bank for a new one and wait until he graduates High school , & get him a practice car first. I don't want to ruin it for your son bat a camaro v-6 or v-8 is way too much power for a 16 year old, and way too nice of a car... Let him bang up a clunker first..

I am a parent of a 16 year old, honor student and all around good boy. I always told him if he got straight A's and didnt get int to too much trouble he could pick out a car from my lot brand new, well he turned 16 last September and I had to buck up and honor my committment to him as he did everything I asked. I too wrestled with being a man of my word and a worriesome parent. In the end I caved in and bought him a new SS cobalt. So far he is doing fine, I have installed a recorder onboard that gives me a report to his average speeds as well as top speeds etc. He was unaware of this and so far he has done fine. I truly believe if you raised your son right, taught him how to drive in ALL situations and trust him get him the Camaro. Of course he is going to haul some ass in the car but who didnt. My son hasnt gone over 82 mph in his car and that speed was maintained for less than 1/8 of a mile according to my recorder so again so far so good. I got a brand new Corvette when I was 16 and was so proud of that car. My father was also a strict guy who said, one ticket or wreck and its parked and you can ride the bus. I got a ticket for exibition of acceleration (donuts in the kmart parking lot) about 4 months after I got the car and he parked it for 30 days and mad me ride the bus. After enduring that humiliating situation (new Vette to the yellow bus) and having all of my friends ridicule me to death I was the best damn driver ever once I got it back. I always new the old man would do what he said and I didnt want to ride that bus ever again nor did I want to give up the bad ass Corvette I was rolling to school in. Long story short, if you trust your son make his dream come true if you can. There is only one 16th birthday and getting a new Camaro would be one he would never forget and giving it to him is something you will nevr gorget either. Good luck with your dilema I know its a tough decision. I just wanted you to know another fathers perspective

Don't do it. Get him an older camaro to start out. 16 y.o.'s just beat the hell out of cars anyway. I had to buy my own first car with my paper route money. That teaches you a lot. You then respect your car a lot more. Wait at least until he's 18.
