At around 90,000 miles, I was changing my rotors, and decided to put on new pads at the same time. There was still a lot of usable pad left on the OEM pads, but I figured that if I had the wheels off, I might as well do the pads at the same time. Replaced them with Duralast Gold.
With my OEM pads, no brake dust is visible until around 300- 400 miles of driving, and even then, it is very minimal... you gotta be pretty OCD about wheel appearance to even notice it. However, the aftermarket pads leave my wheels dark and filthy after each and every ONE- WAY trip--- that's 35 miles--- to or from work. It is amazing to me how utterly filthy they become, that quickly. I was also not impressed with the performance... they do not eliminate MPH nearly as quickly as the OEMs. Luckily for me, I had not discarded my old OEM pads. After a couple of weeks of cleaning my wheels two or three times every day, I put the OEMs back on. I'm back to my wheels staying clean and shiny, the car stops quickly, and I will ride the OEM pads until they are paper- thin. THEN I will replace them with OEMs. Anyhow... perhaps the previous owner of your '14 put on some aftermarket pads? Last edited by Scalded Dog; 01-19-2016 at 10:01 AM. |

I find the OE pads dust up the entire wheel (hence the Webster cleaning inside) in about the same 35 mile period. It's new so I have no alternate reference. And I'm very easy on brakes. My ex had a Mercedes that ate up rotors in 15-20K miles - with plenty of dust leading up to it.

Hawk Ceramic pads are what we recommend for customers looking to reduce dust. They are not suitable for hard use though. They will fade quickly if too much heat is put in them.

Get some of this: "Winner: Sonax Full Effect- Full Effect makes quick work of brake dust and grime on wheels and turns from green to purple as it pulls out the brake dust. Very effective, but very expensive. " And then coat them with a great sealant. You will not be disappointed. and yeah, clean your wheels thoroughly, and through the barrels and all you'll need is soap and water every time you wash the car!

The stock pads are a good balance of wear and stopping power. However, they dust a lot more than a standard vehicle's brakes. It can get worse, believe it or not, if you have a more aggressive pad. However, you can reduce the dust by using a ceramic pad. Just please, please, please don't take it to the track with ceramic pads. |

On my Silverado years ago, I found some protector plates that essentially went on between the wheel and the hub. Stopped all the dust, however, warped my disc, so in replacing the entire set-up, went with a high performance pad they use in emergency vehicles like ambulances, etc... and they were awesome! no more dust, and they are thicker than a normal "over-the-counter" pad...

I'd rather have dust with hard braking ability than no dust and have to deal with weaker brakes.

That is a pretty awesome brush. I have something similar for wheels but it is smaller and I was able to get most of the inside rim clean. I did that when I brought it home thinking oh, they didn't do that great a job cleaning these wheels - only to figure out that they get to be a mess pretty quick!
I've always said, well, with lighter colored cars - if the wheels are clean the rest of the car can appear clean - so my OCD is driving me nuts with the dirty wheels days after I clean them. I don't know if they are OEM pads or not? Dealer got it from an auction, but if it needed brakes I would think they'd put OEM on or it came to them with cheap on it. I'll look into the ceramic when the time comes. I'm not a racer with my car anyway. Thanks all for your input and suggestions - at least I know it's not just mine! |

My OEM pads were dusting up fairly good, so LPE put on CarboTech 1521 ceramic brake pads. They dust up about the same though; bummer.

It's an old "Webster" for knocking down cob webs around your home. Just seemed like the perfect tool because not only do the wheel spokes get dusty, the entire inner wheel does too. This thing shines it up with soap or wheel cleaner. I've had it for years. I presume they're still made. Looks like Wal-Mart has them. It's durable, had it a long time.

And an old 4" paint brush makes an excellent spoke cleaner for the anal car washers out there!

I have some new Tires and Wheels on the way, and am going to order R1 Concepts Drilled and Slotted Rotors cause I like the looks, and they seem a good choice based on info in the Forums. I keep my car immaculate and do not mind cleaning off the car and brake dust on the wheels every time I take it out for a beating. Not sure what Pads to get - Hawks or EBC's? Seems like the Ceramics are OK, but not for more serious driving, so what is best considering I don't give a Rat about the dust?
