Its not normally something the police would look for. You have to give them a reason to check the car out. If they do, and then if they do find it, they will probably give you a ticket and a referral to smog the vehicle.

The best bet is to try and get ARB certified parts if you are in California. Less likely hood of having an issue with the police, and the smog police.

Here is the webpage where you can check for Executive Order (EO) numbers. http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...es/amquery.php

comments please.
Its about a 350 dollar ticket ( ive gotten it before on my old 2005 mazdaspeed 6 ) but no worries the chances of that happening are super slim , besides only reason I got the ticket was cause I was rocking my Celtics flags on my car and cop happend to be a Lakers fan !!!! ugh freaking flaker fans these days lol so he booked me for EVERYTHING including no front plates, tinted windows, exhaust too loud since I took out the CAT and went straight piping, and lastly for having it too low. Was definately not a good day to be a celtics fan lol oh well CELTICS ALL THE WAY !!!!

Law enforcement have the option to impound your car if you alter your factory smog pieces and worse yet they can sell it at auction. Albeit you would have to be doing something very serious, i.e. 100+mph on the street or any DUI. Most local LEO on the beat are not serious gearheads, the biggest thing they look for are missing cats. Don't forget the business completing the work on your car making it illegal can also go to jail.

What's the difference between something unlawfull and illegal?

Illegal is a sick bird....

Funny thing about it is that the aftermarket world is a multi billion dollar business but yet its "illegal" to put anything aftermarket on your car........ at the end of the day it really depends on how much money the city or state need to determine how picky law enforcement officers can be to build revenue , dont get me wrong I have nothing against cops or CHP I just find it ironic is all

You got it all wrong bro. It is not illegal to put anything on your car. Mods that do not affect emissions are all good. Unfortunately, changing your mufflers may not be a CARB violation but you still can get cited for excessive noise or if you drop your suspension too low or tint your front windows, etc. you could get cited. The after-market industry does not only support new cars to which some of their products may not be suitable for passing emissions purposes so it is entirely your option to use any non-CARB parts or find ones that are CARB approved. If you look at a Ford Racing performance catalog, it clearly lists parts that are CARB legal. Other online car performance sources are the same way.
In the grand scope of things, it really is not bad at all. You can get a SuperCharger, set of heads, CAI, etc that are CARB approved. If you choose to go the other route, then that is the gamble you take.

A friend of mine has a Roto-fab, Long tubes and no cats on his car, he had been pulled over and for some reason he popped his hood upon request. (in hind sight we learned that without a warrant you are not required to do so) The cop wrote the fix it ticket for non C.A.R.B.d air intake, front window tint and no front license plate.

He did not notice the LTs and lack of cats.

After extension after extension, my friend finally bit the bullet and went to CHP. He had installed my factory intake & borrowed a stock engine cover in attempt to hide the LTs from further inspection. The cop just signed off the ticket, he did not even leave his desk to look at the car through the window. Danny paid his fine (I think 75 dollars) and off he went... to reinstall his tint and intake & remove his front plate.

He got lucky!

Im not just talking about CARB im talking about in general, if you look up the laws on modifying ANYTHING on the car that is not stock you CAN be cited, most of the things we do mods for do not get attention but the simple fact that we CAN get cited for them is ridiculous, its kind of like Marijuana being illegal by federal law but legal by state law, like I said its all a revenue deal so ultimately it comes down to how bad the sate or government need the money and the lengths they are willing to go to get it

Is the CAI a ARB legal part? Who makes it?

Smog checks, police, side of the road checks, its all about someone doing their job. Some are good and follow all the rules, some are not and don't follow any rules.

If you give a police officer a reason to give you a hard time, then expect a hard time in return.
